Damn dog owners and their inability to pick up poo

Yes, it’s another dog thread.
No, Mumsnet aren’t rabid dog haters.

Yet again I’m cleaning dog shit off my or my kids’ trainers (or bike wheels, scooter wheels, roller boots etc). This time, not only is it on the sole, but before I’d noticed, I’d bashed the offending shoe against the side fabric of my other shoe, and it’s ingrained in. It was smushy and stank.
I’ve scraped it off as best I can before I get home, but I expect they’ll need to go in the washing machine, which will probably ruin them. Or I’ll just bin them, as I don’t really like the idea of dog poo in my washing machine.

On to my AIBU.

AIBU that it is high time we had a high-fee dog licence, which paid for dog wardens, dog poo dna testing, extra cctv, a database of dogs to detect which owners aren’t picking up, massive fines for the offending owners, and taking the dog away for repeat offenders with a lifetime ban on owning dogs.

YANBU - we need to re-introduce dog licences, and come down hard on owners who leave poo in public spaces

YABU, it’s just poo

Damn dog owners and their inability to pick up poo

YABVU. Pricing people out of owning dogs via a ridiculously priced licence won't fix the problem. There are a lot of old, vulnerable, poor people whose only companion is their dog.

As a new puppy owner I find it a disgrace and brings dog owners a very bad name. It is shameful and shame on them. It is not difficult to pick up the poop and dispose of in the correct way. On my dog walks I have encountered doggy bags left on the side of pavement just why why why would you do that, take it home and dispose of it if you can’t find a doggy bin! And the amount of massive pops just left there, it is a disgrace. Even worse is often outside my daughter’s primary school there is dog mess that really get’s my goat as I always think those poor kids who will accidentally tried in said offensive poop! There is a dog bin literally outside the school and still there are many of times there has been poop right in the middle of the pavement. Rant over but very much with you OP

100% yes - to all of the above. I have been there so many times with either myself, children or the pushchair wheels ending up covered in dog poo. We walk regularly and it almost feels like each morning on the way to school there is yet another poo to have to avoid. A solution is overdue, it is so incredibly unfair on those of us who do not own dogs or want them, their saliva or their wee and poo anywhere near us or our wheels or shoes.

And isn't it funny how it's 'never' anyone who leaves their dog poo for others to have to deal with. Any Facebook post is met with 'outrage' from dog owners - well it's one of you! 🙄 😒

Urgh I hate it.

Fruitjellies · 01/06/2023 19:13

Its gross.

I see dog poo that's not been picked up probably once per week on my 3x daily dog walks. Every single dog walk I see abandoned rubbish / food at the park.

Conclusion is people are ignorant, lazy and gross. Some of them are dog owners. Some of them have children. Some of them have neither.

Some sort of euthanasia or permanent removal for the dogs of people who let their dogs do this is the only solution. Generally those dog owners who are willing to buy a license etc are not those who create the problem.

I don't hate dogs but I am sure that there are too many in this country as a moment. My little urban park is full of them and their waste.

Euthanasia for the owners 😉
As with other posters I agree with licensing, insurance, registration and anything else because I am a responsible owner.

Exactly this, humans and their inability to clean up after themselves everywhere they go .

HoisttheMainSail · 01/06/2023 19:35

I’ve lost count of the number of times that I’ve had to sniff out my dog’s poo as she’s done it in the long grass and I’ve failed to maintain total eye contact with it. It’s worse than finding a lost golf ball 😀.

But yes, it’s disgusting. But it’s part of owning a dog. Folk round us are pretty good with dog poo. Again, it’s a very dog friendly place and people will rightly shame others who leave it.

SwordToFlamethrower · 01/06/2023 19:42

Damn dogs barking all day and night too!!

aloofflooty · 01/06/2023 19:54

Lovetheplace · 01/06/2023 18:23

The tide is turning . My family run 2 cafes in neighbouring towns. We were dog friendly but have now changed back to no dogs (unless guide dogs obviously)

In the 18 months of being dog friendly we had multiple complaints of bad dog behaviour and upset customers.
More wee and poo accidents than you can imagine and we lost most of our regular non dog owner customers and seemed to get an influx of rude entitled dog owning ones who spent less and had far too many of the free dog treats 😂

3 months in and we are doing much better . Had to have a deep clean of both premises though as they became so run down

We often had issues with dog mess outside the cafes too and we had to clean that up as it was affecting our customers and the public where the outside seating was and just so many accidents not dealt with

@Lovetheplace why did you go dog friendly in the first place if you don't mind saying? Is it just a bit of a craze currently? I can't understand why any cafe / shop etc is dog friendly as the 2 seem totally incompatible in the ways you describe!

ILikePizzas · 01/06/2023 20:49

Bag it up and hang it at eye level on tree and bush branches. No, I don't know why either.

People kept asking after covid , then we saw other businesses doing it and thought it was a positive move but it really didn’t work out at all. It’s a shame really as the issue was definitely the owners not the dogs. There’s a very real phenomenon it seems where dog mess is invisible to a dogs owner if they think they can move/get away quick enough 😂

DogPooPoo · 01/06/2023 21:07

Currently at 74% agreeing with me, and very vocally many owners willing to pay for a licence. Hurrah!

I hope the politicians are paying attention.

I don't understand people who say licences won't work. We have all sorts of hoops to go through to be able to drive and run a car, it would be like that. I would happily take on a government role in charge of this!

We have owners letting dogs crap on our front garden patio or if they do bag it then the bags get left in our bush. I used to be a dog lover but I can't stand them now. Yes I know humans are to blame but I hate them all.

Unluckycat1 · 01/06/2023 21:15

I'm a newish dog owner and despair at the sheer volume of dog poo not picked up :( I can never just enjoy a walk, I've always got one eye on the ground. Of course I hated it before, but now I follow the beaten dog walking trails I see so much more than I used to, vile. I would never leave poo. If I found I didn't have a bag (unlikely, they're in every bag and pocket) I'd wait until another dog owner passed by and would ask for a spare. Can't understand the mentality of leaving it at all.

WiddlinDiddlin · 01/06/2023 22:41

I would welcome a reasonable fee for a useful licence.

Licence owners, not dogs - so either you have a licence to own dogs or you do not, rather than per dog.

Licence granted on owner completing a dog ownership test that demonstrates they're aware of dog related legislation, basic training/behaviour stuff...

However we don't have a database or even anything existing that could be used, to do this.

To create one would cost billions.

Who will pay for that -we know who will BE paid to do it - some brother/cousin/uncle of someone in the current government who fancies it, having never done such a thing before in their lives.

Who will police it - dog wardens? We don't have enough, and the LA pay for them, they pay the cheapest going, providing the minimum cover over several LA's. So you would need many more dog wardens before the licence scheme started (or there is no money to pay for them, and without them policing and enforcing, take up will be low... so cash generated... low... so...)

What are the penalities for non-compliance - fine? dog confiscated, that comes with a cost, who will be paying for kennelling of seized dogs if the owner does not claim them within a certain amount of time? Who is paying to chase up non-payers?

IT seems like a good idea, but the reality would be that the good parts wouldn't happen (ownership test, educating owners) and it would simply generate debts amongst those who are already poor, and probably generate animal welfare issues (dogs hidden away unexercised unsocialised etc) as well.

I don't see how it solves the issue of dogs under irresponsible ownership - if caught they will simply not pay, not collect the dog, go out and get another one.

FlipFlopsInMyCar · 01/06/2023 22:43

dog poo DNA testing

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🐶🐶🐶🐶

AdoraBell · 01/06/2023 22:44

Speaking as a dog owner, it’s not inability to clear after their dogs pooh, it’s unwillingness and an attitude that it’s not their problem.

WiddlinDiddlin · 01/06/2023 22:45

The DVLA database cost billions.

It hasn't yet stopped me being hit by an uninsured, unlicenced driver in an un-MOT'd car driven on false plates though.

It didn't even save me from the costs of that particularly incident. Or the next. We've had 4 accidents where someone has hit us in the car, 2 of those were unlicenced/uninsured/etc drivers in dodgy cars. Thats 50%. Unlucky perhaps but whilst the law can in theory punish those people (if it could find them. It couldn't!), it can't actually prevent it from happening.

Whippetlovely · 01/06/2023 22:49

Yes it is disgusting and most dog owners also have children so would be in agreement. We don’t want to be picking poop off our kids shoes either. There’s a path right next to our kids school at the back entrance known as poo alley ,ppl know this is used as an entrance to the nursery end of the school yet allow their dogs to poo all over the payment. It’s disgusting. They should be fined but the councils can barely afford what staff they have so this issue won’t ever be resolved there won’t be dog wardens or park wardens.

bamboonights · 02/06/2023 20:38

I feel your pain as a dog owner myself a and I often suspect it's possibly teenagers being asked to take the dog for a walk. I have a bigger gripe with humans who seem to think it's on to poo like a dog in a bush or behind a tree, when public toilets are a few hundred yards away. Then my smells it out and eats it. Utterly repulsive. Would so much rather council wardens stopped being arses over parking and actually bothered to capture and fine these people who litter our nice area with their animal and human shit. And yes bring on a license and canine behaviour training courses for would be owners.

pookiedoodlepuppy · 02/06/2023 21:31

@bamboonights I know what you are talking about . I walk my dog very early mornings in the country park and hate the summer, the amount of human waste (faeces) and other human associated waste from them enjoying themselves is disgusting .
Why go to an area of beauty and do that .
