Air cooler for small box room? Vs air con

Really sorry to be posting for traffic

My son is in the box room and his room gets all the evening sun and so most of the last 2 summers it's been 30 degrees+ overnight.

Looking at getting either a portable air conditioning unit or an air cooler?

Has anyone used an air cooler before for a box room? I understand that they don't work anywhere near as well as an air con unit but I'm thinking as it's a tiny room then a cooler may be good enough?

Looking for any advice from people who have tried it..

Also with a cooler , does it just cool you if it's pointing at you like a fan? I obviously don't want to be having the cooler blowing directly onto him.

Thanks

I have a similar question.

I have both and for 30 degs to a nice temperature, I would say portable air conditioner all the way.

The air cooler is essentially a glorifed version of a fan with a bowl of ice in front of it.

I'm an incredibly bad sleeper with the heat, if it's under 22 at night, I use a fan. Less than 24 and I'll use the air cooler and anything else I get my aircon out.

I try to delay using the aircon as it needs more energy to run. And I get greedy and acclimatise to 17 degrees at night 🤣

Sitting/lying in front of the air cooler (we have it on a crate at bottom of bed pointing at us) feels lovely and cool, but it's not going to cool the room down, just push cool air at you. You can fill it with ice as well as water which improves things, but its not a patch on the portable aircon

To really cool a room they need to be vented to the outside. You can get window attachments with big corrugated plastic pipes like the ones for tumble driers. However, if they don't fit in the window properly then heat just gets back in. You can get fan coolers that just blow the air over water..but they don't do very much.

There is nothing that you can buy and just stand in a room that will cool it down appreciably. Most "room coolers" just chill the air a bit by blowing it over water. We just bit the bullet and installed an air conditioner in attic bedroom. It was just unbearably hot in summer. Worth it in hot weather. Works as a heater in winter too...

Definitely aircon. I have a portable aircon unit, and while it is quite noisy (that might just be mine tho!) it is great. The portable cooler, as PP has said, is just like a fan with a bowl of water in front, but more annoying as its noisier and easier to spill the water as you fill / empty it! And for a room thats that hot, it wont do much at all.
