To be annoyed by people raiding our skip

Skip on drive, near front door (big drive so not near the path at all) we also keep our gates closed although they are low and easily opened.

Just seen a bloke sifting through our skip, ok whatever. What is really annoying me is they keep opening all of the (MANY) bin bags up, tearing them open, so all the contents (aka food waste as our grey bin is full, leaves from the garden because our garden bin is.. also full, general broken tat) fall out into the skip, which they won't take unless stuff is bagged.

I know we're in a cost of living crisis but it's just annoying me a little. Just loose items, whatever, but really- the bin bags?

We had a skip last year while we were getting some work done and had the opposite problem, people loading their crap into our skip overnight and filling it up before we had a chance to.

Oh gosh, what did you do? I'm glad we haven't had that!

I was about to say, it's much better than people filling it without permission!

Yes definitely! I might put a piece of paper and stick it to the top saying "ONLY CONTAINS GROSS CRAP, PLEASE DON'T RIP THE BINBAGS OPEN."

I think I'd do the sign if I were you OP

OooohKeepYourKnickersOn · 25/05/2023 20:23

Oh God put up the sign @Genericusers Grin , seriously though they are going to cost you time & money when the skip company refuse to take it
Bolt your gates and put up a cheap CCV in operation sign

SmirnoffIceIsNice · 25/05/2023 20:25

I was going to suggest a sign.put it in a plastic wallet to protect it. Big letters stating bin bags are full of food/garden waste or broken items, please do not rip them open. Maybe write CCTV in operation, even if you haven't got it. Might deter people further.

Could you put a padlock or some cable ties round the gates to keep them closed at night?

There wasn't much we could do other than try to fill it ourselves as fast as possible because they were doing it during the night and we couldn't stay up all night guarding it! It was stuff like old microwaves and old broken baby buggies that people were dumping. 😣 Very irritating.

DdraigGoch · 25/05/2023 20:30

Nicking stuff out of a skip is generally fine in my book, but obviously leaving a mess like they've done is wrong.

OooohKeepYourKnickersOn · 25/05/2023 20:32

*padlock not bolt your gate

ProtestantsHateAbba · 25/05/2023 20:33

I wouldn’t mind people taking stuff out of the skip as long as they didn’t leave a mess, which they are in this case. Agree that people loading their own crap into someone else’s skip is much worse though- hiring a skip ain’t cheap.

BitOutOfPractice · 25/05/2023 20:35

The skip people will only take bagged stuff? How odd.

Not all stuff, just little bits like food waste, leaves, which I think is fair enough really.

Someone dumped some stuff in my sister and BIL's skip and were fuming. Posted on local FB group about it and someone messaged to say who it was, gave his address. BIL got his stuff out of the skip and took it back round to his house and dumped it in his garden. CF threatened to report BIL to the police for fly tipping until BIL pointed out that he would simply forward the CCTV footage to them!

He wasnt the sharpest to be honest as DSis only lived about half a mile away from where he did so chances are someone would recognise him!

DiscoBeat · 25/05/2023 21:04

Maybe put anything usable outside the tip with a sign saying 'help yourself to these. Contents of the skip are household waste' or something similar.

When we have had a skip DH puts the metal items next to the skip. They always disappear quickly. Saves room and deters skip divers.

NewPinkJacket · 25/05/2023 21:35

This is such weird timing because I've literally just ordered a skip less than 10 minutes ago! 👀

Like a PP, I'm surprised they won't take ripped open bags.

I don't mind people taking what they want from the skip but around here, they tend to take lots of stuff out, take what they want and then leave the rest on the driveway. I've had to run out in the past and make them put it back in 🤬🤬

CalloohCallayFrabjousDay · 26/05/2023 11:07

Stick a few shitty nappies in the bags so they get a "nice" surprise!

Nordicrain · 26/05/2023 11:08

I'd be tempted to put a "Warning - bags contain asbestos, do not touch" sign on it

MonumentalLentil · 26/05/2023 11:22

Get the skip alarmed and covered.

Sigmama · 26/05/2023 11:26

Why is your domestic bin so full, surely all non food stuff can go in the skip or recycling
