TL;DR- lighthearted, I don’t want to buy new furniture for a house we might not be in for much longer
Renting currently, the house is driving me up. The. Walls. Omg. The carpet is horrid, nothing goes, the place is a heat trap (poorly insulated despite being a newer build, meaning cold in winter and baking hot now after the sun has been shining through the windows all day). It’s a massive source of stress for me and I’m not motivated to keep it clutter free and fashionable because I know it’s only a home ‘for now’. I know that might sound shallow and I am thankful to have a roof over my head but all the same.
We’re viewing houses at the minute and hope to have bought our first home by latest the end of the year, know that might be ambitious given we are now nearly in June…….
DH wants to buy new big chest of drawers x2 because we admittedly have rubbish clothes storage, a wardrobe, a huge Kallax unit and that’s it. It fits all of our stuff in but it’s inconvenient in the sense of the drawers in the Kallax unit are those cubes, so they’re very deep and you forget what clothes you actually have and have to rummage.
The cheapest real drawers we can find to host all our clothes would amount to £300 for the both and they don’t look very nice.
I would rather wait to see what the house we put an offer in on looks like, and then once the ball is rolling in the journey possibly then think about ordering new furniture - more durable (and therefore slightly pricier) stuff that is going to last for years and complement the new house well.
DH thinks we should just live for the now, he says the storage situation winds us both up and we can move any furniture we buy. I honestly see zero point in spending any amount of money on something that might only be suitable for 6 months or less. Sure you could sell it but if it’s cheap stuff it won’t resell for very high. Plus if we did take it with us we might damage it on the way, and logistically it’s harder the more heavy furniture you’ve got to cart about with you.
YABU - DH is right, why can’t you buy the furniture now if it’s got to be bought at some point anyway and house buying might take longer than we expect
YANBU - wait to see what your new room dimensions are and just make the best of the storage situation at the moment
