What do you think life in the UK will be like 30 years from now?

The year is 2053. I will hopefully be about to retire. What do you think life will be like?

I remember in my teenage years I became irrationally convinced I would die at 25. I remember reading that young people inexperienced with life can feel this way because they just can’t picture their future selves in an adult world which is unknown to them.

Now mid 30s I am getting similar feelings and it could be because the future seems so uncertain. AI, Climate Crisis, World Powers shifting- etc etc.

So what do you think 2053 will realistically look like?

Shit. Ter.

AI controlling all.aspects of our lives.
Driverless cars.
DNA stored for all individuals.
All are movements tracked and recorded.
More ethnically diverse society.
Loads of old people who will.also be in poverty due to poor pension provisions.
Some species extinct.
Hot hot summers
Cold cold winters due to climate change.
Lots more extreme weather the norm.

RudsyFarmer · 18/05/2023 21:51

I don’t think I’ll be seeing it but I hope it’s safe.

CheeseTouch · 18/05/2023 21:51

Widespread famine, disease and wars over resources. Mainly driven by runaway climate change.

Dovetail40 · 18/05/2023 21:52

cashless society

luvvverly · 18/05/2023 21:54

Awful in every way possible.

thesnailandthewhale · 18/05/2023 21:54

Education will be done from home, schools would have been sold off and made into flats.

NameChangeSorryNotSorry · 18/05/2023 21:54

I don’t think it’s helpful to look to the future and say we are fucked/it’s going to be shit/horrendous for young people. What a dreadfully negative approach.

I hope:

  • We all live in an environmentally friendly way- walking, cycling, no fossil fuel burning, recycling most things
  • Recognition of ageing population and proper plans put in place to support
  • Scientific advances have improve carbon capture and while the environment is still a worry big global changes have improved the outlook
  • Work will look different due to AI but there will be different opportunities.
I could be negative but I have two small children and I refuse to just accept their life will be terrible.
MandyMotherOfBrian · 18/05/2023 21:55

Have you ever seen/read Children Of Men?
Probably like that. But without Clive Owen.

Spendonsend · 18/05/2023 21:56

I think the uk goverment will be in perpetual war against climate migrants. There will be water rationing.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 18/05/2023 21:57

No cash.

Probably no keys or smartphones, just a chip inserted under the skin at birth which can do everything (identification, tracking, phone, payment, opening your front door etc).

Blancmangemouse · 18/05/2023 21:58

It’s really difficult to imagine a realistic scenario that falls between the fear of hell-on-earth and (fading) hope of an enlightened utopia, isn’t it? This is what I’m struggling with.

Cure for many genetic conditions cancer, heart disease and diabetes etc.

That sounds very 666 to me

Blancmangemouse · 18/05/2023 22:08

I guess I’ve been thinking:

  • Two class society, huge gulf between rich and poor.
  • Extreme weather events
  • War for resources
  • Mental health and crime huge issues.

In my hopeful moments I hope that the above will be avoided as we will have become carbon neutral and will also have technology that is reversing the damage done.

Hopeful we will not be controlled by the government fraudsters who have debased our currency, inflated everything we own/buy and steal our hard earned cash. Bitcoin will rule, centralised banks have all burned I mean closed down. CBDC's we're just a theory.

DinaofCloud9 · 18/05/2023 22:21

It will be great. Different but great.

Liebig · 18/05/2023 22:23

DinaofCloud9 · 18/05/2023 22:21

It will be great. Different but great.

Greater poverty.

Greater wildfires and drought.

Greater flooding and weather bombs.

Greater immigration pressures.

Greater strains on limited resources.

Greater infrastructure failure.

The future is, indeed, great for everything and everyone.

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 18/05/2023 22:26

Don't ask this on here, OP. By the end of page 2 you'll want to jump out of a plane with no parachute.

Itdoesnthavetobejusrol · 18/05/2023 22:27

It'll be like the dark ages. Land ravaged by climate change. Clean water, food, fuel and work hard to come by. Pillaging and exploitation rife. No affordable healthcare for anyone but the well off.

Sorry to be so cheery
