WhatsApp to hide 'special chats'

Meta has announced a new WhatsApp feature called "Chat Lock" that will enable users to hide their most intimate messages behind one more layer of security. When a user locks a chat, it removes it from their inbox and places it into a password- or biometric-protected folder. Locked chats also won't show up in notifications. Meta said it believes the feature will be useful "in moments where someone else is holding your phone at the exact moment an extra-special chat arrives". The introduction of the feature comes as the UK government is urging tech giants to monitor content that gets shared on its platforms. The move appears to put Meta at odds with the UK government again, which is aiming to strengthen protections online with its new Online Safety Bill.

which will make it brilliant for cheaters eh?

Yeah I bet all those scumbag cheats are rubbing their hands together with glee.

Great so teens being groomed will be able to hide chats with their perpetrators.

From the corporation that originally created Facebook as a way to rate how fuckable the girls in Zuckerberg's university were.

It’s more child groomers who will benefit from this. Grim.

Yes that was my thinking too.

Antisocialfluffmonster · 18/05/2023 13:59

Personally I will use it. I have conversations with friends about personal issues that I wouldn’t want others seeing, or personal issues of my own. That and it would have saved a lot of heartache when teenage DD managed to dig into messages that contained evidence of DV.

This rolled out last week.

It's pretty easy to get passed if you can access someone's phone.

WheelsUp · 18/05/2023 14:04

Cheaters, groomers and abusers will be using this so that they can pretend that they are good people.

WhatsApp aren't unreasonable to compete with Snapchat with this feature.

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 18/05/2023 14:25

To be fair you could already lock Whatsapp so you need biometric info to access the app. I don't have message previews on the phone so the only way you can access the messages is if you're me. This just adds an extra layer.

I've nothing to hide, but my friends and family are entitled to privacy in their conversations with me if someone is using my phone for other reasons.

I was thinking its a bad thing because (like said above) young people can hide messages from groomers, cheaters can hide their illicit messages from their partners while pretending to be open

To be brutally honest, people can hide messages just as easily by not using a mainstream messaging service. There are already plenty of ways that someone can hide their actions whether that’s drug dealing, cheating or whatever. No doubt politicians will make great use of this.

I’d be more concerned about kids and partners with a second calculator on their phone, kids with Tor browser on their devices, and Snapchat than this. Because ultimately if you find evidence of cheating it’s because the person is a muppet and has no idea what they are doing.

I’ve never cheated in my life by the way, but I was a victim of DV, and I knew how to hide the fact I’d been talking about it and how to hide plans.

Im with @Antisocialfluffmonster. If someone wants to hide messages there are other apps they can use that are more under the radar than WhatsApp

Exactly, and people who are determined will find a way.

its not going to make anyone less safe than they are already or make any cheats more inclined. They were going to do it irrespective of whether they had so does this or not
