Escort police knock down 80 yr old woman

Escort police, protecting Sophie Wessex, knocked down an 80 year old woman yesterday.

Why does SW need a police escort? Motor bikes surrounding her car?

AIBU to think this is madness?

Link?

Poor woman, it sounds like it's a really dangerous road and residents have complained about it before but members of the RF do get police escorts

Actually it is VERY weird.

Nobody else seems to be reporting it.

Eh? It’s all over the news, Sky, BBC etc

Tbh I really don't think it matters who the escortee is, it's part of a police officer's job. It's fully down to the driver. If a fire truck causes an accident on its way to a job, do we question who they were going to?

Indeed.

BitOutOfPractice · 11/05/2023 13:15

Yes, why the hell does she need motorcycle outriders? How much is this costing us all?

that poor woman. I hope she’s ok. It sounds like her injuries were serious 😢

Your missing the point. It doesn't matter why the motorbike was there. Would this be LESS awful for the lady if it was a 25 yo delivering pizza or a 77 year old biker off on an afternoon jolly? No.

They need to investigate what happened. The same justice needs to be meted out as if it were the pizza lad or the old biker. So if it was dangerous driving etc, then punishment. IF that doesn't happen, because it's Sophie bodyguard, then it matters who it is.

If it's a tragic accident which could have happened whoever was carefully driving along, then he should get blamed more or Sophie blamed for being there.

Best wishes to the lady and her family.

I read about it in The Times this morning.

It isn't the Duchess of Edinburgh's fault, she wasn't driving.

Agree with this.

PicaK · 11/05/2023 13:23

She's 80. I'd honestly hazard that she tried to cross when it wasn't the right time - thinking there was a gap because the traffic had slowed and she got clipped. Especially if she was a tourist unfamiliar with that road.
Obviously that's pure conjecture.

But this is crazy.

If they go in a blacked out car nobody will know who they are.

Police escort for the Wessex is NUTS.

Have they proved who is at fault?
As u r assuming it’s the police escort or Sophie’s.

For sure it is the police officer in question.

But - these escorts create havoc. They really do.

It is madness to have them for the Wessex family.

Can we all just take a minute to marvel that the daily mail link for this says ‘Sophie’s agony as as motorcycle cop smashes into OAP’?

what about the elderly lady’s agony daily mail?

PuttingDownRoots · 11/05/2023 13:27

Police escorts are sometimes to help them get through traffic in a short time frame not for security.

Riapia · 11/05/2023 13:27

Disgraceful behaviour.
The rank of duchess should be removed from her immediately.
Before sending her to the tower.
Those republicans will be gleeful at this.
😉😁😁

Phos · 11/05/2023 13:28

She's a working royal and quite a senior one especially with Harry and Andrew off the scene. It doesn't surprise me she has an escort.

I know driving conditions were bad that day.

But I also know that road.

Police escorts typically drive fairly agressively.

They should be used for the right reasons.

On the up side the poor lady probably got an ambulance quickly whereas if she had been hit by someone else she could have been laying in the road for a while

RunningFromInsanity · 11/05/2023 13:37

People get hit by cars/motorbikes all the time.
Irrelevant why the motorbike was there.

Well it isn't really. The amount of traffic on the road directly impacts pedestrians. Why does she need an escort? She was going to the garden party at the Buckingham Palace. Would anyone have cared if she'd been late?
