Primary school teachers/headteachers, does this sound like something you’d say/do?

DC has SN and tonight attended an event at another school for DC with SN and disabilities all invited DC were in Years 4 or 5 and there were about half a dozen schools there. They were one of only 4 from their school that went.

2 of the others that went from their school where given a certificate but DC and the other child weren’t. I wasn’t there as they went from school and parents weren’t invited.

DC said they tried really hard and had fun but came last in every game they played and that the last game where they had to play as a school DC couldn’t do it at all so their school ended up losing.

DC was gutted and came out crying saying they were useless but they’d had fun.

They were adamant the headteacher from their school said that they (DC) and the other one would get a certificate to, but that the host schools headteacher forgot to print them off. Apparently the certificates from the other 2 children there were “kept” by the headteacher to keep them safe.

Does this sound likely? Or more like the headteacher of our school is going to make certificates for the two who didn’t get them? Or do I need to prepare DC for disappointment in getting a certificate?

I am absolutely fine with them not getting anything and I think them coming last is a good lesson and it’s also likely due to DCs SN they’ve misunderstood what the HT said, so I want to prepare them if that’s the case.

It is highly likely that there was an error with names or printing. I have been at these kinds of events before and it happens. Just tell your dc that the teachers might have made a mistake with the printing.

@cansu Thank you, they probably won't understand that so I will prepare them that there may not be a certificate, because they can cope with it then being a nice surprise if they do get it, but can't if they're expecting something and then don't get it.

You could always drop the school a quick email thanking them for taking the dc to the event and asking if there is any chance a certificate could be printed. I wouldn't mind being asked and would print one if I had access to the template. I wouldn't promise it to the dc in case it isn't possible though.

Thought I'd update, certificate has come home today, DC had to stand up in Assembly and be praised by the headteacher for it.
