To think this is crap customer service from Argos?

My son received a gift card from Family Fund (charity for disabled children and their families) for £300 for an item we had requested. They sent the payment in the form of an Argos gift card.
Today we decided to order the item, and it showed as avaliable for same day delivery between 7-10pm. I ordered with the gift card and paid the extra £100 that was required for the item. It all showed as ordered, and for delivery tonight on the confirmation screen after I paid.
I just thought I'd check my email as it was getting late and I wondered if there was an update. I couldn't find any email from Argos, so logged back in to the site to find that they had simply cancelled the order. No notification of this whatsoever.
It isn't avaliable for delivery now, so I will have to collect. I clicked to do click and collect. To make matters worse I had thrown the gift card away. I had to root through the bin, and rinse the damn card off. Guess what? It says the card has no value now.
On their website it suggests that if an order is cancelled they won't have taken the money. But they clearly have - both on the gift card, and my phone app shows it has come out of my bank for the additional £100.
Phone lines are all closed now. It is notoriously difficult to speak to a human at Argos as it is. I'm worried that the item will be out of stock for store collection by the time the morning comes (it seems to be on offer). I don't know what to do for the best. AIBU to be bloody cross that they have taken the money and not at least sent an email to notify of the cancellation?!

The money should go back onto the gift card automatically as a refund. I work for argos . It could be that the item you ordered in came in damaged from the warehouse and they've damaged it off or maybe couldn't find the item in store so it was marked as missing. It would then automatically issue a refund 3-5 days. The system is really old and complex sadly. We do try hard to avoid this as a company . Could you contact your local store and they could reserve it for you on the system or customer services as soon as it opens but obv u would need to wait for the refund.

That's good to know at least that we will get it back. I'm sure the item will go out of stock before the morning if I'm honest. I'll have to try and ring first thing, but I've got to get kids to breakfast club and me to work, so it will be.... fun! Can you even get through to store these days? It is virtually impossible to get through to a call centre on the phone.
Why wouldn't they have notified me of this though?
Wonder if they can issue with an online gift card straight away, rather than having to wait?
