To wonder why concert tickets are so complicated these days

We're going to London tomorrow - very exciting as we're off to the Abba Avatars and I'm going to Duran Duran (DH refuses).

All great, but what a palaver getting the tickets. I assumed that once I'd paid they would be mine, but no for Duran Duran I have to join the o2 app which I have no desire to, and for Abba they keep sending me cheery instructional videos on how to find my online tickets and prepare for my experience.

AIBU to wonder why they can't just email the tickets so I can print them out ( yes I know I don't need to) like I used to do ?

It's a huge monetized thing now that harvests data. It's bigger up to be an experience and you'll be making memories. But it's really about money and data

Bigged up

I've stopped going to big venues because of this. I hate it. The tortuous hoops they make you jump through to access something you've spent a fortune on.
I wanted to go to an exhibition. I bought my ticket online, they sent me an email, I turned up, showed them my eticket (no need to even print) and they let me in. Its really not a very complicated process is it?

And don't ever ever buy tickets as a present or you'll end up having to drive to the venue and produce the card the tickets were bought on as evidence that your parents aren't ticket thieves and can legitimately take their seats to see Rod Stewart. Yes, you Resorts World Arena with your ridiculously priced parking!

I'm thinking next time I might just pay the £2.50 extra to get a physical ticket sent out to me.

But that's their plan... To screw as much money out of you as they possibly can.

Oh is that option still there?

my sister recently had the O2 app fail with her tickets and nearly missed the start. I thought there wasn't a paper ticket option. If there is, I'd definitely want that.

Bollockybollocky · 28/04/2023 20:32

Posted too soon. I did that because they were a present. Then spent weeks trying to get them to post out the tickets only for them to send an email the day before advising that they should be collected from a particular place and to present the email/code.

Am I being naive, yes they want data, but I also thought it was to reduce ticket touts etc.

EmmaEmerald · 28/04/2023 20:46

Really stupid question but what data would a ticketing app collect?

These firms are the touts now with secondary marketing.

Keep them as souvenirs to look back on. I have loads !

@Pedallleur that makes sense, if they don’t get £ one way they get it another.
