To wonder why the Brits fleeing Sudan are getting so much coverage?

First and foremost, I totally sympathise with the issues faced by people in Sudan, including the British nationals fleeing. However, I am surprised at the wall to wall coverage for what amounts to fewer than 1000 people who’ve left so far.

There are lots of civil wars and conflicts taking place around the world, most of which get very little or no coverage. There is also very little mention of the actual conflict in Sudan or those left behind.

Aibu to be wonder why these particular individuals are getting so much coverage while there are so many other vital issues globally and domestically which get little attention.

There was wall to wall coverage of the search for that lady who disappeared walking her dog, and objectively that only affected one family. The conflict in Sudan is a big current issue with a complicated evacuations effort, it deserves coverage. The interest will die down if it continues for long. What other issues would you like to see reported instead right now?

heldinadream · 27/04/2023 20:14

I've seen 2 other threads with the exact same subject.
A war has broken out. I know coverage of wars is patchy, but this is an immediate conflict affecting Brits abroad. I'm a bit mystified to see 3 threads questioning coverage, TBH.

vodkaredbullgirl · 27/04/2023 20:20

Because there is, just like Ukraine and other wars.

pizzaHeart · 27/04/2023 20:24

The war has just started and it affects people. Of course it’s on the news.
out of curiosity what other issues globally do you want them to report about instead?

Highdaysandholidays1 · 27/04/2023 20:25

Sudan was a British colony and more Brits are trapped than other European nationalities. They have also been left behind a bit when the entire diplomatic team got out earlier and left them there, that's a news story.

MotherOfRatios · 27/04/2023 20:25

Yet this was ok when Ukrainians were fleeing sounds about white, oops I mean right!

Nordicrain · 27/04/2023 20:27

British people care about british people. Who are leaving. They care a lot less about Sudanese people, who are those staying and impacted. The news reports on what the public care about.

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 27/04/2023 20:28

You're wondering why the British news is covering British people fleeing a war?

Nordicrain · 27/04/2023 20:29

Also, the government are probably keen on/ encouraging the publicity and they probably thing it's a "win" politcally. Them swooping in and saving all the poor Brits.

DojaPhat · 27/04/2023 20:31

I hear you completely OP! They're just not white enough for you to give a damn about.

Didtheythough · 27/04/2023 20:35

We live in Britain. British news focuses on British people. This particular conflict involves a large group of British people. Sorry to sound patronising, maybe there was more to your question?

This.

Quveas · 27/04/2023 20:38

Wall to Wall.. where?

Highdaysandholidays1 · 27/04/2023 20:38

It's also coming hot on the heels of the Afghanistan debacle.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/04/2023 20:39

The Briefing Room

This might help explain the significance of the war in Sudan

Agree with this.

Plus we have a responsibility to these people. They got left behind and rightly made a fuss. The news picked up on it. Good.

pompomdaisy · 27/04/2023 20:47

Quite an insular and racist view.

ChristineCricket · 27/04/2023 20:51

It is also such a time critical issue with the cease fire ending soon. Do you understand the reasons everyone has given here?

Fancylike · 27/04/2023 21:20

Have you considered that British news covers the viewpoints and experiences of British people in greater detail?
I’m not in the UK, but have seen lots of coverage on Sudan, including a special focus on citizens of this country trying to leave. Because that’s the localizing news hook.

Dibbydoos · 27/04/2023 21:22

Shit is going on all over at the mo. America moving nuclear ships to S Korea because of N Korean threats, China circling Taiwan, Israel and the Palastiniabs still in conflict etc. The war in Sudan was by all accounts enabled by the west, wtf. Things are heating up all over.

Each nation getting their people out of Sudan is critical. Arab nations are better able to help war refuges due to geography but we all must help.
I hope the war ceases soon so the people of Sudan are safer. 🙏

I read a young woman's account of hiding under her bed then after several days planning an escape through gun fire etc. That's terrifying.

I didnt realise the diplomats left first, but quite clearly some people are valued by this government more than others...no change there then.

I am good withtghe coverage, it is not the only news and c46m people live in Sudan, so it's not a small country.

The test of the alarm this weekend has me a little spooked... It feels like a dangerous period to me.

BillyNoM8s · 27/04/2023 21:28

I don't understand why you don't understand?

There is news coverage on the repatriation of British nationals, to Britain. It's British news Confused

There will still be people who are left behind and it's not yet known if/when they'll be able to get out. People are having to leave their parents and loved ones behind in an active and escalating war zone.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 27/04/2023 21:29

Easy - lots of people are clicking on those stories. So they write more.

The press is led by the people's interest. Everyone just seems to not realise it.

Stillcountingbeans · 27/04/2023 21:34

Because it is dramatic and exciting.
"News" is just another form of entertainment media.

The news is not chosen by what is actually important, but by what will grab emotions.
