To ask if you can get pregnant with no period?

My periods stopped in January 2022, and my doctor told me it is because I have PCOS. Ever since, I have been having unprotected sex with my partner under the belief you couldn’t get pregnant if you weren’t having periods (?).

I have been having a lot of nausea this week with stomach cramps and an intense craving for sugar and chocolate which isn’t my normal. Almost like I’m due on! I was on the phone to my therapist this morning and told her about this in passing conversation and she asked if I could be pregnant, I said ‘no, I don’t have periods’ and she said that you can still get pregnant without them.

I’ve looked it up but can’t find anything medically relevant because all of the articles talk about periods stopping when you are pregnant.

I haven’t got any pregnancy tests and there were none in the shops today so will have to check in the pharmacy again tomorrow.

Has anyone got any insight into this? I do feel stupid now, but can’t change what’s done! We already have a son who is three. X

I have PCOS and endometriosis. In the two years we were trying to conceive I had two periods. My last period was September, I found out I was pregnant in May. It's definitely possible. A lot harder if you don't regularly ovulate, as I don't but clearly not impossible as I did get pregnant.

Cheapcookies · 25/04/2023 21:20

Yes you can. It is harder, but hot impossible. I known several people with PCOS who conceived naturally despite not having periods.

I'm one of the other ones who has PCOS, has periods, but don't ovulate...there's not always rhyme or reason to these things.

So the answer is yes & you should do a pregnancy test.

EarringsandLipstick · 25/04/2023 21:23

Of course you can OP!

You will ovulate before a period - so while you might have had an extended time of no periods (and not ovulating) you may now have ovulated and if not pregnant, would have a period.

I'm not sure if this might be good news for you? In any case, start with a pregnancy test & take it from there - I hope you get the result you want!

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 25/04/2023 21:30

Yes. Last period October, only 8 weeks pregnant in May.

Babycakes6 · 25/04/2023 21:31

Defo possible!!

Pahpahpotato · 25/04/2023 21:37

You definitely can, for the reasons pointed out above. When I got my BFP for my son, it was march, but I’d not had a period for about six months before that.

DustyLee123 · 25/04/2023 21:39

Yes, you get pregnant without periods as you ovulate before the period.

declutteringmymind · 25/04/2023 21:42

Yes, a period happens a few week after an egg is released. Therefore you only know if you've ovulated after the event. When it's too late.

Toaskthisquestion · 25/04/2023 21:45

I literally had no clue! Thank you everyone. I’d be okay if I was and okay if I wasn’t. There was a period where we wanted to try again but decided it wasn’t something worth thinking about as I wasn’t having periods.

It's ovulation of an egg you need, periods are just a sign that egg wasn't fertilised this time and can be very inconsistent ... There is a reason they tell you insistently about contraception in hospital after having a baby - my friend was breastfeeding and had no return of periods after giving birth but still fell pregnant again, they are barely a year apart ... so yes def can get pregnant without having a period!
Good luck OP I hope you're happy with whichever result you get.

twinkletoesimnot · 25/04/2023 21:59

I did - I have PCOS
Hadn't had a period in close to 2 years. We got a bit lax with contraception as thought no chance, but dd3 came along!

89redballoons · 25/04/2023 22:14

You can, as to get pregnant you need to have sex around rge time you ovulate. Ovulation tends to be a couple of weeks before your period starts. So it's possible to ovulate and get pregnant after having no period for ages, but you would have had a period had you not got pregnant.

I have PCOS too. In March 2018 I came off the pill. I had one period in September 2018 and another in December 2018, then nothing until I found out I was pregnant in April 2019. That was DS1 and I went on to conceive DS2 as soon as I stopped breastfeeding DS1 - again my periods were never regular at any point after DS1's birth

I'd do a test for sure.

Lcb123 · 25/04/2023 22:15

Of course you can. Probably less likely but always possible

TheSnowyOwl · 25/04/2023 22:34

You have a period around two weeks after your ovulate, so you (usually) have to ovulate before having a period; therefore, you can get pregnant without the need for a period.

One of my friends had never had a period. She has three children!

That seems really odd. If she's ovulating (which she clearly is if she has 3 DC!) she would be building up womb lining on every cycle - if she didn't have a period, that lining would remain which would pose a significant risk to her. If she didn't develop the lining, she wouldn't have had successful pregnancies.
