To ask why I can book a package holiday at a hotel but can't book accommodation only? Any travel agents know?

Just that really. Friends are going away for a week away next summer. Due to childcare I can only do a few nights. I'd like to book just the hotel, and book flights separately, so I can hire a car and do a bit if exploring rather than have transfers etc. It's also quite expensive to book a few nights on the package - £1200 for two people for a week, or £700 for one person for 4 nights. But everywhere, including the hotel website itself, says no availability on those dates. There clearly is availability if you book a package with flights. I'm guessing that means package operators have first dibs on rooms? But I can't even book it accommodation only through them. Is there any way around this?

If you book a package holiday, do you have to get on the transfer or could I hire a car from the airport? I've never really done holidays that way so not sure! Cheers.

Holiday companies batch book rooms.

As above, plus if their main market is packages for 7 days then they won't want to charge you less for 4 days in that week as they won't be able to sell the remaining 3 days.
