To ask what the weather is like in Greece in October

Is it worth booking a sunshine holiday? Some really good prices but weve never been to Greece so wondering if it’s cheap for a reason

Areas we are looking at are Kos and Halkidiki

We went to Kos in October half term a few years ago (last week of the season) and had glorious weather apart from one day when it poured.

Thank you! Sounds lovely

Kos is very close to Turkey so temps will be fairly nice in October. Towards the end of the season so things will be winding down.

Been to both and love them Halkidiki is a big region, where in particular are you looking at?

Stardust31 · 22/04/2023 15:34

Kos in October is lovely. I lived there many moons ago and remember sunbathing on my birthday in the 30 degree heat

Oreocrumbs · 22/04/2023 15:36

We went to Kos last October half term. The weather was lovely, mid-high 20's. I would say the pool was absolutely freezing but the sea was a pleasant temperature! We had a lovely holiday.

reluctantbrit · 22/04/2023 15:46

You need to be prepared for a mix in my opinion. We had glorious days but also the odd shower and the last day torrential downpour. The pool was freezing and the temperatured dropped around 4pm.

Also, check the resort. Friends had bad luck with some of the resort restaurants only doing reduced service and not a lot nearby was open in the evenings.

Bit hit and miss

it’s not the assures sunshine of summer, there could be autumn storms. Saying that, it’s unlikely to be raining the whole week

BogRollBOGOF · 22/04/2023 15:47

Expect temperatures in the 20s. Water is cooling off so not ideal for pools. Can be thunderstorms.

It's a nice time of year to swerve intense heat.

If school holidays aren't an issue, earlier in the month is better as the season winds down by the end of the month.

We went the last week in October (half term) is was cool (cold at night) and lots of places had closed for the season.

HermioneWeasley · 22/04/2023 15:50

Depends where- you’d have to go far south like Rhodes or Cyprus

maddiemookins16mum · 22/04/2023 16:01

Ex Greek holiday rep here, big difference between Corfu (pissed it down once we got to October) and Crete where it stayed dry/warm until November. The further south you go the better.

StaringAtTheWater · 22/04/2023 16:07

It varies, but if you go south it should be okay. We've been to Crete twice in October. The first time was properly hot - 30 degrees highs, no need for a cardigan ever. Second time was more like 22 degrees - nice and warm in the sunshine, but in the shade I felt the need for a cardigan. Still wore shorts / dresses the whole time though.

zusje · 22/04/2023 16:34

I'm half greek and grew up on Crete. I would stick to Kos if you're doing October as Halkidiki is up north so more chance of rain/chilly weather. Kos is close to Turkey and tends to be warm even for locals (I grew up on Crete and we all boiled when we went to Rhodes, a stone's throw away from Kos, in June one summer and we were used to heat!). You can be lucky and have glorious weather (usually about mid twenties but not unheard of to have high 20s or even 30s, I think last year was warm for quite long if I remember correctly from speaking to my parents who are still on Crete) but you might be unlucky and have rain as well (unlikely to be more than a day or two though). The sea will still be warm from summer but pools will likely be too cold (especially for young kids) unless heated. Depending on area you might find it limited to what is open (some places might have already packed up for the season but to be honest wth Covid and rescession a lot might be closed even in high season, that was my experience when I went back home last May for the first time in 4 years). Personally if you could I'd try to go end of September or very early in October for best chances of warm weather and things to do!

MasterBeth · 22/04/2023 16:38

Had a beautiful week last October in Corfu. Mid 20s, just gets dark by 6.30.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 22/04/2023 16:43

We went to Crete Oct last year.Very nice during the day could sunbathe etc.Cooler on a night

June2008 · 22/04/2023 16:47

We go every year in Oct half term. Mid high twenties temperature. In the 18 years we've been doing it we've only had one year that was a complete wash out. You might get the odd day with a shower but for us it's generally sitting by the pool/on the beach weather. We'll actually out on the water, cycling or doing some kind of activity! (The pools are usually pretty cold but it doesn't stop us going in.)
Some years it does get dark early but that very much depends on when the clocks change in relation to HT.

It's so nice having some sunshine in the Autumn term!

missingthewinchesterboys · 22/04/2023 16:54

We did Zante Oct half term.
Everything was shut, if the sun wasn't out is was freezing, pools were too cold to use.
It was definitely last one to leave hit the lights.

Cyprus is not in Greece.

SarahLucSc · 22/04/2023 17:27

We have been to Kefalonia in mid October.

We were there for 10 days - prob 6 days of sunshine and mid 20s temp, 3 days of cloudy weather at about 19 degrees and 1 day where it chucked it down.

Much better than home at that time of year!
