To think Facebook is just so much better than Instagram?

I'm 30, and have both.
Instagram is choc+a-bloc full of adverts, influencers and people showing off. Most people on there are under 30/35, and there seems to be endless streams of people videoing their nights out , ( which doesn't seem very spontaneous to me). There seems to be no sense of community there , and cannot share anything that's not a picture.

Facebook on the other hand , seems much more of a community. People of all ages use it. I enjoy seeing my great aunt's holiday pics, or photos of my dad's neighbours cat. The pictures are funnier, warmer and it's much nicer to see my friends kids easter egg hunt than endless video streams of someone's night out or smashed avocado. It seems to have a much wider reach.
I've seen people genuinely helped by community Facebook groups, and special interest FB groups. People can still enjoy/ share / debate political content.
AIBU to say I don't get why Instagram is more popular, as Facebook just seems better?

Change your algorithm by following better people on instagram

JamSandle · 21/04/2023 14:19

I prefer fb too but I have both.

Kittykatchunjy · 21/04/2023 14:20

I get pictures of flowers and gardens on both! It's your algorithms that mean you're getting ridiculous videos. I prefer FB as I like more words

DanceMonster · 21/04/2023 14:22

Surely you only see content from the people you follow on Instagram? So if you’re not interested in smashed avocados, don’t follow those people?

Eloradannin2nd · 21/04/2023 14:22

Facebook seems to have been taken over by adverts, while my instagram seems to be constant reels of self important people who think they have a ‘unique’ outlook/tip/video which is then followed by an infinite amount of the same video content by different posters.
Im slowly losing interest in both platforms to be honest!

Instagram is supposed to be more image based so holidays, food etc It's owned by the same company as Facebook so they want you to use both for different things. It's like comparing Word and Excel- they are good for different things.

I don't really get the night out content. Mine is generally food related and it's filmed in a way that you don't always see the person doing the cooking.

I don't follow any influencers and don't understand why people follow them but that might be an age thing. I look up product reviews but I don't have a trusted source that I would turn to.

Your facebook sounds wholesome

my family post minion memes and have rows in the comments of the sun newspaper. my aunt is continually checking into a and e to bring on the ‘what’s wrong hun??’s. My male cousins are oafish and just tag each other in shit, vaguely homophobic memes as a form of banter. My female cousins wax lyrical about ‘the boy doing goooood 👍’ for making them a cup of tea when I know they are shagging the barmaid at the local.

I can’t delete them because my mum will go mad so I have had to mute them all. I only use fb for marketplace

I much prefer my curated Instagram. It doesn’t seem like you follow the right people

Eloradannin2nd · 21/04/2023 14:23

The reels I see are random people that I don’t follow.

Instagram is choc+a-bloc full of adverts, influencers and people showing off.

I thought that was what Instagram was supposed to be about? Just people doing photographs and showing them off. What did you think it was?

Facebook started off as a way to keep in touch with people you knew/know. And it still can be but now its for photos to show off, to join in with hobbies/like minded people.

Honestly though, both are crap and can do your head in. I came off fb several years ago.

I want to prefer instagram because I prefer the look and the layout, but I’m only interested in following a few people (home interior type things) for inspiration. The adverts (and crashing) almost makes it impossible to use nowadays.

Lovingitallnow · 21/04/2023 14:26

I prefer insta. A picture is a 1,000 words for me and I like seeing pictures that make me happy, I like seeing how people in not in touch with or living. If I want to interact to engage with someone I'll do it in real life and not online and I don't really want to use social media to seek out other people's comments or opinions either so for me I much prefer Instagram. I think they both serve different purposes and needs. I don't really want to be part of an online community so the absence of that on instagram
suits me.

I’m 28 and have stopped using both although I retain a Facebook account. Literally the only people who post on my Facebook feed still are older relatives (no one I know my age has posted regularly for about a decade!) and the rest is ads. I found I ended up wasting too much time on Instagram so I deleted it and don’t miss it.
