Standing in the seating area.

Honestly not sure on this one.

Last night me and DH were at a big arena concert. We had chosen to sit rather than stand. I was so pleased we did as I injured my knee and would have not been able to stand for that length of time. The woman in front of us stood for the entire performance more or less. DH asked her if she would mind sitting as we couldn't see past her at all and she wasn't very polite when saying no.

What does Mumsnet think? Is it ok to stand when in a seated area of a venue and were we BU to ask her to sit?

I went to see Michael Bublé a few years ago, had Floor seats. Everyone stood up and I couldn't see a thing. Really pissed me off. The thing is when it's floor standing tickets and there are no seats, you can move around to get a view, when it's seated but everyone stands you can't do that. I'll never by floor seats again, I'll only by side tiered seats if its music or if there is the option of standing floor tickets I'll get them. The problem is when it's a popular artist and everyone is trying to get tickets, you don't always get the option to choose.

See this annoys me. My sister is a wheelchair user. We go to a few shows together. Usually the wheelchair spaces are half way up the venue - especially if it’s an old building - meaning a lot of the time my
sister then can’t see when everyone stands up. She has had countless tickets refunded as she can’t see the act. Yes she gets her money back but it’s really not fair.

I know it makes me a party pooper, but I'm with you OP.
I buy seats so I can sit and enjoy it, I don't want to be on my feet all night, or I would have bought standing.
Plus, I'm stupidly short so I spent most of watching the Rolling Stones with a man that must have been at least 6ft 6 stood up in the seat in front of me totally blocking my view.
Ruins it for me.
If you want to stand, buy standing.

Bayleaf25 · 18/04/2023 21:27

Yes ‘most’ concerts I’ve been to people stand (in the seating area) for the main act. There is usually an accessible area at the front of the tier though so wheelchair users or people needing seating for a medical need can sit down and still see.

ThinWomansBrain · 18/04/2023 21:31

can't remember what I saw, but the last thing I went to in the seating area everyone stayed seated until the last number or two.

TBH, if a venue offers seated or standing (and not a huge price differential) why buy seated tickets if you don't want to sit?
I often see stuff at the roundhouse, always choose the seated area if there is one, and expect people to remain seated if they've chosen tickets there.

This. If you’re short having people standing all around you ruins it and it doesn’t make much difference if you do stand unless the seats are very steeply banked.

Knickerthief1 · 18/04/2023 21:37

YABU - if it was any kind of pop concert people always stand in the seated areas. It's miserable when they don't.

BeyondMyWits · 18/04/2023 21:46

Last gig I went to was Bring me the horizon at Cardiff Motorpoint. Was fab... the "kids".. late teens... were standing downstairs at stage level, we (many!) chaperones were sat on the balcony watching the amazing lighting show in comfort with easy access to the posh loos.

No one on the balcony stood, the view was stunning.

And this is why I don’t go to concerts unless I can get a seat at the front of a tier. No point in paying to stare at a load of backs.

With many acts where tickets sell out in minutes you don't get a choice, I prefer standing but so often seating is the only option even when you are waiting online for the tickets to go on sale.

I go to a reasonable number of gigs, 12-15 a year at a variety of venues. Very, very few have ever enforced seating. Usually as soon as the band are on everyone is standing. I might sit down for a break in a quieter number (or a song I don't like!), but otherwise I'm standing.

If you asked me politely, I would be extremely polite back, but I wouldn't be sitting down, I'm afraid, sorry.

Changingmynameyetagain · 19/04/2023 00:13

I’ve only been to one concert where those who had seats stayed seated the entire show and I’ve been to hundreds of gigs over the years.
The best part of going to a concert is dancing and singing along.
I might sit down for a song I don’t enjoy but I would be on my feet as soon at the main act is on stage.

Floralnomad · 19/04/2023 00:20

I always book a seat as my concert companion has CFS but I invariably stand , as do most people so YABU .

warmeduppizza · 19/04/2023 00:35

This happened to us recently - the majority of the space was standing room only, but about 1/4 of the audience had seats and remained seated. The girls in front of us were standing throughout. We couldn’t stand up because everyone behind us wanted to stay seated, so we didn’t see a thing. Very annoying.

LucifersLight · 19/04/2023 00:53

I was at an arena concert (rock/metal) earlier this year and had chosen seated.

Everyone in seated stayed seated.

Was at an arena concert last year too and same.

Stressyfab · 19/04/2023 01:08

I’m guessing you’ve not been to many concerts.

What type of concert? I went to David Gray and hardly anyone stood. I imagine everyone up on their feet for Coldplay.

I imagine everyone left if it was Coldplay

Haha, I've been to plenty. It has been a few years though and I've gone from queuing for hours to be right by the barrier with my standing ticket to needing a change of pace and a seat. For context the gig where seating was enforced was My Chemical Romance and last night was Paramore. Fairly similar crowd. Same venue, same seating section. Not everyone was standing but it's just my luck that the person I was behind was and I had an excellent view of her back.
