To assume that when we report a thread and NHQ say “we’re looking into it,” they’re just humouring us? And to assume that troll hunting is now allowed and considered acceptable?

So, over the years I’ve reported threads and MNHQ have mailed back saying “thanks for the report, we’re taking a look.” And the thread has remained, I’ve always wondered whether they really do look, especially when it’s a thread which you know must have had a lot of reports but then just assumed that they obviously must have considered the thread to be legit.

However, more and more recently I’ve seen threads left to stand, and more relevant, troll hunting posts left to stand.

So recently I reported a thread which was dubious but again, no way of knowing. However the thread is full of posters saying “it’s a fake; fake post thanks for the windup” and so on. So when I reported the thread I pointed out that there are a lot of troll hunting posts on it. And MN hq emailed me back and said they were looking into it. And the thread is still there, but more importantly, so are all the troll hunting posts. Which just leaves me thinking that they clearly don’t always look into reports, as if they had, the troll hunting posts would have been removed, even if the thread wasn’t.

I can’t imagine bothering to report threads in the first place. What drives you to do it?

bellac11 · 16/04/2023 14:37

Just ignore them?

I report the odd thing if I think that someone is vulnerable or abusive but equally couldnt care less if its made up and stays, I just dont re visit it

You don't run the site, they do. It's up to them what stays and what goes.

Mumsnet encourage us to report posts! To stop trolls as well as personal attacks on other posters.

I very occasionally report things - from memory I get the holding "we're having a look" email - and I'm pretty certain there's always a follow up saying "thanks everyone for reporting...." and the outcome

Maybe I only report things that are so OTT that a high volume of reports get submitted on the same post.
I can't imagine being that bothered to check back on the post - even once, let alone repeatedly. If you don't like the post, why keep looking back at it?

ilovesooty · 16/04/2023 14:58

You'd be better off specifically reporting the individual troll hunting posts if you think they break the guidelines.

Tinkerbyebye · 16/04/2023 15:08

I have reported in the past, the threads have always been pulled as they were trolls

Yerroblemom1923 · 16/04/2023 15:15

I can't imagine bothering to report a thread unless it was downright offensive eg racist, homophobic, dodgy
If I'm not interested I just read something else.
If anything I'd argue MN are delete-a-thread happy at the moment! So many threads I bother to comment on or get invested in get deleted and it's so disappointing tooth be able to read the responses etc before it disappears. Maybe Mumsnetters are a bit crazy on "reporting" threads that really don't merit removing and MN HQ think they should be seen to be doing something so they do.
The only time I've found them slow to remove threads is at weekends and holidays as I guess there's a lot of staff off too so no one is monitoring it as closely.
Perhaps MN need to update the rules as lately we can't discuss certain celebs in a negative manner (and yet some we can, because clearly MN dislikes them too?!) , we can't discuss the news especially criminals and any SEN thread is shut down if anyone dares say an opposing view. Tbh I think they've become v lazy. Instead of deleting individual offensive posts they now shut down the whole thread as it's easier than wading through the posts.
Also all the "we've taken this thread down while we 'look into it'" is a joke as they never put the thread back up again!

I report the obvious perverts, pedos getting off on the stuff they are writing/asking people to share etc. I also report the obvious bullshit begging threads. Anything that takes advantage of others really.
