You Tube screen time for 8 year old (game walkthroughs)

DS8 loves You Tube for watching (mainly US YouTubers) Minecraft/Among Us game walkthroughs. It's so shouty 😂

It's the only thing he wants to watch and asks for it 2/3 times a day but I do limit to once a day for 30 mins or so in the holidays.

How much do you let your 8 year old watch? Thinking of rationing YouTube for the weekend!

I think I’m a minority but I don’t allow my 8year old DD (year 3) access to YouTube at all. She also doesn’t have access to games such as Roblox or Minecraft. I just feel like it’s not something g a want to encourage for her. She does ask occasionally about them but is accepting when I say no.
I think you are right to limit to 30 minutes.

My DS is also 8 and is also really hooked on watching American people play video games- no violence or dodgy language or anything because I think the YouTubers know their target audience, but I don’t really like it as it’s just brain rot. He’s only allowed to watch it on the family tv so I can keep an eye and he has to ask before putting it on, unlike Netflix or Iplayer. Not ideal but I think helping them moderate and helping them reflect on whether it’s a ‘good’ thing or not is the best I can do in terms of teaching healthy lifelong habits!

My DS (7) could watch these videos for days on end. they absolutely wind me up but he enjoys them for some reason! I don’t have a strict time limit I just don’t allow limitless access - all depends what we are doing that day etc. and I keep an eye on what he’s watching (there are a few I know that are fine/suitable)

I’ve blocked youtube and kidstube for my 8 yr old. He had been watching it last autumn and getting a bit addicted and I didn’t like what the stimulation/constant change of programmes was doing to him. He’d been watching these American families who live amazing lives and constantly have unboxing sessions. And then was upset we didn’t live like that.

I agree. It is brain rot. There's nothing dodgy about them but they literally don't draw breath the whole time😂Preston is a fav atm. It's only on the family TV (the only TV we have) so I can monitor it but he's putting it on the moment he wakes up.

I think I'll say it can be a weekend treat. I have to limit TV as he would watch it all day long if he could. He plays Mario on the Switch which I like but I stopped Among Us as that got a bit much.

Sat eve is family film night and I've just put an old Disney film on (Robin Hood) and he loves it!

I'd give him a choice - time on Youtube vs. actual gaming: watch other people play, or play yourself?

loafmalt · 15/04/2023 18:39

He loves outdoor play so gets a good mix of play and chilling.
