AIBU to boycott this business?

I've been buying clothes from a local business as I like to try support local and she has unusual items. They've peed me off a bit though.

She does "Facebook lives" where she sells the clothes. A few weeks ago she had a lovely hoodie at £22, but someone commented before me and got it.

I messaged her and asked if she'd get any more in, and if she did please let me know. She said of course.

She then does a live randomly in the middle of the day today - she has the hoodie I Wanted on sale for £12.

I messaged and said please could I have it - she said sorry it's gone from someone on the live. I said I'm gutted as I asked her to let me know.

She then only has collection 5-7pm 2 nights a week. I have a young baby so got there for 5pm. Her mother answered and said "good job I was in!" I said sorry? She said her daughter had put on Facebook collection was only from 6pm that night. I said sorry as I'd been driving as I live 30 mins away and hadn't looked at Facebook.

I wanted something that she said was £10 on the live - she then said it was £12. I was certain she said £10 but for the sake on £2 I paid it.

Is it me being a bad customer or AIBU to boycott them from now on?

It sounds like a big hassle to me. Depends how much you want the stuff.

TheFlis12345 · 15/04/2023 15:34

It seems like a really complicated way to buy clothes, I couldn’t be bothered with all that faff.

Pashy · 15/04/2023 15:34

That doesn’t sound like such of a “business”, to be honest.

I couldn’t be arsed dealing with that level of inconvenience. It shouldn’t be that hard for someone to take your money.

LividHouse · 15/04/2023 15:34

Good god I haven’t the patience for any of that.

sst1234 · 15/04/2023 15:38

What is she selling that so special that you can’t buy from a proper shop. These hobby businesses are not real businesses. Don’t waste your time with them.

Slobberchops1 · 15/04/2023 15:40

It’s probably off Ali express anyway, just go on Vinted for nice unusual pieces

Jumpingvert · 15/04/2023 15:40

Is the stuff so special it’s worth the hassle?
If not why bother?

savoycabbage · 15/04/2023 15:45

But she can just do all of those things as it's her business. Small businesses can open and close when they want. It might not be the best thing to do for their business, keeping irregular hours, but they can.

You asked her to keep the hoodie and she said yes, but she didn't. She won't have the systems set up to do this like actual shops so she probably just forgot.

What is she selling that's so brilliant?

QuillBill · 15/04/2023 15:53

It's not boycotting if it's so damn hard to buy something that you can't do it! It must be one fine hoodie.

Qbish · 15/04/2023 15:54

What are you paying in petrol to get these "bargains"?!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 15/04/2023 15:57

How do you even know whether they fit or how good they look on you? Presumably, she doesn't do mass returns, as with online shopping from the big companies?

EmilyGilmoresSass · 15/04/2023 16:03

I don't mind buying handmade clothing from small businesses every once in a while, but if she's just ordering this stuff off a supplier I wouldn't bother my arse

typopro · 15/04/2023 16:05

Can you find out where this "seller" sources the hoodies from and just cut out the middle man.
I wouldn't be arsed with that faff

gettingolderandgrumpier · 15/04/2023 16:07

You don’t need permission from us if you don’t want to buy from her don’t . Sounds a bit crap tbh and no I wouldn’t bother what’s so great about this hoody ?

ditzylazymummy · 15/04/2023 16:07

They accept returns on non sale items but to be honest they seemed a bit pissed off at me when I did return a couple of things, and I had to remind her about it to get my money.

It was the way her mum said "good job I'm in!" Very rude and abruptly when she only posted at 4.30 collection would be 6pm and not 5pm - I'd already set off by then.

Then I just thought it wasn't nice when I'd asked her to let me know if the hoodie came back in and not only did it and she didn't let me know - but she let it go to someone else at a sale price! She didn't even say "I'll tell the other person I'd promised it to someone else"

Doesn't really sound like a business at all. I'd steer clear.

ditzylazymummy · 15/04/2023 16:10

It's a bit like bows boutique clothes if anyone has ever used those but much cheaper. I tried to scour the internet for a hoodie similar but had no joy. I believe she gets them from a wholesaler but she said they had no more of the hoodies in when I asked.

Sounds very MLMy to me.

YellowDots · 15/04/2023 16:11

She didn't even say "I'll tell the other person I'd promised it to someone else"

Of course she didn't. She'd sold it to the other person. She would be crazy to tell the other person she couldn't have it after all.

You seem to be expecting her to behave like a proper retail shop when she isn't.

B0g · 15/04/2023 16:12

Why are you wasting so much of your time over a hoodie?
If you’ve not bought any of her stuff, and are going to continue to not buy her stuff that’s not a boycott 😄for actual boycotts you’re meant to let the company know you won’t be using them, and why, otherwise there’s no point.

ditzylazymummy · 15/04/2023 16:17

I've spent about £200 with her over the past couple of months. I've got something to collect and then I think I will message her with the reasons given above. She's lost my custom but might maybe make her think in future xx

OP posts:
HulaBulaa · 15/04/2023 16:22

Well it sounds like an overly complicated way to sell clothes but as someone who runs a business selling items online (on a pretty large scale) I absolutely hate it when people send a message on an email or Facebook and ask me to let them personally know when something is back in stock. I cannot possibly remember or have time to go through and personally inform every single person who's asked to be told. Just check the website for goodness sake. I even have a 'notify me when available' button on the site where people would get an email but no they still want to be personally informed by me, it gets ridiculous. So yes I think YABU to be annoyed that she didn't send you a message, I'd think it would be your responsibility to double check when things were back on her store / page if you wanted them.

TO be fair, it is almost impossible to remember who wants what - there are probably so many people and so many items and it is not really feasible to check a notebook or document each time an item comes in.

Oh good lord… this is an incredible amount of angst over a shop(type thing).

You either value the goods she has on offer enough to overcome the ridiculously convoluted buying process or you don’t and spend elsewhere. This isn’t a boycott. She won’t care why you stopped buying because she clearly has other customers. This isn’t a relationship where you need to have the breakup talk.

ditzylazymummy · 15/04/2023 18:00

@HulaBulaa she doesn't have a website, she sells everything on her Facebook lives
