To suggest friend removes this Facebook post?

Friend has shared a tik tok of himself wearing a beanie hat, fake dreadlocks & moustache & sunglasses, nodding his head up and down, giving peace signs etc. I'm not offended personally but my immediate reaction was to cringe and think that it was not very appropriate. He was also wearing his work lanyard but had finished work for the day. A number of people had liked it and one commented (jokingly I think) "you'll be cancelled mate". His page is set to private but he has hundreds of fb friends and suspect he hardly knows lots of them. He is a good friend and a nice bloke, I don't consider him racist and think he would probably be mortified if anyone was offended, by something he posted so suspect silly error of judgement. WIBU to message him and suggest he takes it down or let it go......

Yes. He probably thinks all the people on his Facebook are his friends but an enemy could use that against him.

Whilst I understand where you are coming from and it is definately an issue having his work lanyard on I would be tempted to keep out of it. The other friend saying you will be cancelled is a bit of a hint and if he doesnt get it thats his error of judgement.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 14/04/2023 08:28

I mean, yes you should suggest he removes it.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 14/04/2023 08:30

You don’t need to get embroiled in a big discussion, just one message giving the advice and if he ignores it that’s up to him.

carriedout · 14/04/2023 08:35

Saying 'you'll be cancelled' is a sure sign these people are twats.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 14/04/2023 08:38

Yeah I'd just message him saying he might want to rethink as he's wearing his lanyard

MiddleParking · 14/04/2023 08:39

You don’t post racist tropes (which he knows they are) on tiktok if you’re not racist Confused

IamnotSethRogan · 14/04/2023 08:42

I think you should mention it. I once had a friend who shared one of the EDL posts when they used to do all that fake animal welfare concern to get shares. She was a vet so shared it because it raised a concern about something she was interested in and had no idea about who the EDL were and I knew she would be mortified. She was grateful when I sent her a private message just saying the EDL was a very racist group who use animal welfare posts to get shares.

I haven't seen the video, but there are many white people in my area who have dreads and wear beanies. They are into peace and the environment.

hildaogden99 · 14/04/2023 14:50

Apparently he posted because he's a massive Marley fan. The post stays.

Well, probably nothing bad will happen but if it does you will know you did what you could.

dontgobaconmyheart · 14/04/2023 14:58

Hopefully somebody will report him to his employer for it then.

It sounds immature and is obviously not necessary or appropriate. If he thinks it is or thinks its funny then I'm not sure that reflects well on him and wouldn't be making excuses for him either. He knows the implications. If there are consequences it will only be his own doing.

tryingtohavehope · 14/04/2023 14:59

Nobody owns wearing beanie hats, dreadlocks or having a moustache so no it's not racist unless your saying they're only acceptable for some people.

Whatkindofuckeryisthis · 14/04/2023 15:00

Not sure what the issue is? If someone were to dress up as say Madonna or Marilyn Monroe with a wig and lipstick etc.. would that be an issue? I’ve never understood why this is classed as racism!

Surely reporting somebody to their employer for this would be an incredible overreaction?

@IamnotSethRogan

I am glad to hear you told your vet friend about EDL was behind this,

I didn't know EDL were manipulative people also in that way to deceive people into click on to watch animal abuse concern videos in that way to get more people more away of them ect

How petty and malicious of you.

@Whatkindofuckeryisthis I agree. If a white or a black person styled their hair and wore clothes like their favourite K-pop idol, would that be racist too? Or does it only go one way?

They're called locs not dreads. Dreads is offensive. And the environmentalists you mention may want to stop as they're using culture as a costume.
