To ask for tax-free childcare help?! £4.8k in credit

DS was supposed to start nursery in November. We set up a tax-free childcare account ready for him to go; but DH was in an accident and we postponed his start date.

He was then due to start in January, and February, but due to various issues on the nurseries side, he hasn't yet.

They've just called and said they finally have his space all sorted; I'm confident all is resolved and happy for him to go - but they've also said that his account is now £4.8k in credit from tax-free childcare payments, so we won't need to make payments for a while. They've requested that we reduce our tax-free childcare payment down to £10 to let the credit reduce, but I haven't even started paying into the account yet, let alone paid the nursery from it.

Is this how it works? Our nursery account does show credit, but our tax-free childcare account doesn't show anything.

It'd be a massive relief if it's right, but I also can't see how it could be, especially as I thought you could only get up to £2k per year in help, and he's only going 3 days a week 🤯

Sounds like the nursery has allocated money to the wrong child. You would have to send money to them from your tax free childcare account for them to receive anything. If you haven't sent anything, the credit is not yours.

Well there's clearly been an error. Ask them t go back and check that they have matched the payments against the right child. If you haven't been paying in it won't have been paying out, and the credit you get is only put in your account when you pay into it (ie. you pay in 100 and it credits it 120).

Yeah this definitely isn't correct OP

Something has gone amiss here. Nursery don't receive any payments from tax free childcare until you put money in the account and set them up (as one off or regular payments).

Have they definitely got the right child?!

Why is this in AIBU?

Thanks all, I thought so.

The nursery were insistent they hadn’t made a mistake. The errors there have been to do with staffing, the head team has changed four times in three months. I’ll ask them to check again. They’re not keen on letting me pay while there has been such a credit built up and have said I can either use it or they’ll refund it to my tax free childcare account.

Thanks for the clarity!
