... to ask if there are musicians you admire for their work outside music?

I've always loved music, and still listen to a lot (of mostly old stuff!) on my work commute. Just wondering if there are musicians you admire, like or respect for something other than music. In real life, I know no famous musicians, but two that stand out for me are:

  • Joni Mitchell. After finding out her own paintings were used as album covers, I've always liked her paintings.
  • Bob Geldof. Really don't like his music, and find him annoying in the few interviews I've seen, but I do have some admiration for his efforts around Live Aid, etc. I don't know if they were successful or not, but his interest and efforts seemed genuine and coming from a good place.

One that stands out for me is Tori Amos and her work with RAINN.

Of course I don't know her in any way, but liked her music, and have seen here may times live in the 90s and 00s. Reading/hearing detailing her own experience really helped me not feel alone.

There is an recent article about Tori Amos and Life Before The #MeToo Movement https://fionadodwell.medium.com/why-were-we-silent-all-these-years-tori-amos-and-life-before-the-metoo-movement-4008f2401375

There are some autobiographies by musicians that I've really enjoyed, and learned a lot more about them and their music. I enjoyed the books by Patti Smith (Just Kids) and Viv Albertine (Clothes, Clothes, Clothes. Music, Music, Music. Boys, Boys, Boys)

Professor Brian Cox, the physicist and tv science presenter. He was also lucky enough to marry Gia Milinovich, the jammy sod.

Rod Stewart for paying for MRI scans for patients in Essex, for calling for a pay rise for nurses, and for calling on the Tories to step down.

Also, for his epic model railway.

Brian May is really nice to hedgehogs.

Feargal Sharkey. He campaigns hard about preservation, cleanliness and care of waterways and rivers.
lovely fella.

John Bonjovi has a restaurant that people can pay what they can toward their meal. Everyone welcome no matter what their circumstances.

I was going to say Dolly Parton but been beaten to it by several!

Unfortunately I've met Bob Geldof (I used to live nearby) and he was not a nice person. Witnessed him haggling pretty aggressively in a second hand book shop and the words 'you know who I am' were used.

Annie Lennox.
