I've long harboured this opinion and so far the people I've voiced it to have been split so I thought I would throw it out to you lovely ladies.

Paul Simon is a genius, his songs and music are amazing, however, pretty much every cover version is better than the original that was sung by Simon and Garfunkle.

So Mumsnet, AIBU?

@Slitherie , my goodness, I dind't realise until now that I don't think i ever really understood that song until hearing that version just now.

Although I do have time for Everything but the Girls Only Living Boy in New York

That Peyton Parrish version is so similar I guess I cuoldn't choose between them but what'sintereting about his voice is in the lower register he sounds like he's doing that Mongolian singing style where they somehow hold two notes together, forget what it's called.

God I think that Disturbed cover is fucking dire, the singer sounds like the love child of Zack de la Rocha and Alfie Boe.

@Magenta82 I'm so pleased to find someone who also thinks the Johnny Cash cover is Hurt is just as good/better than the original! It's just so evocative and so meaningful. IIRC Trent Reznor said something like hearing JC was going to cover it was like hearing someone say they were going to fuck his girlfriend, but after he heard the track he realised they were meant to be together? I do love the original though, especially as the contrast to The Downward Spiral. Just amazing, especially hearing it for the first time.

Two things I am surprised not to read in this thread however:

  1. The Tale Of The Mumsnetter who believed they were brothers called Art and Garth Funkel.
  1. Also that one has brought up "Valerie" in a covers discussion, yes it was an amazing cover but no one ever shuts the fuck up about it

Oh bless, that's hilarious!

IMO, shit song and I hate both versions (sorry Amy!).

I'm now listening to a First Aid Kit mix on YouTube. They're great, love their harmonies too.

@So1invictus - they forgot to tell Dylan he couldn't sing.
😀
And I agree too that he was an amazing lyricist.

He got there on his own.... I remember reading an interview where he says "I can't sing and I'm not a great guitar player, I just needed something to carry the poetry." I completely agree even though I'm a huge fan of his!

Shocking opinion op

I don’t often say YABU, but really? The glorious soaring almost otherworldly voice of Art Garfunkel? He made those songs!
