To ask if you think Facebook has changed since 2010?

I only really started using Facebook seriously in 2010 so wasn't one of the very earliest users. I do think Facebook has changed now though compared to that time.

The main change I see is that the friends I have are divided more into very prolific posters who post every day virtually and ones who post nothing at all! There are ones in between - who may do a post a week or something like that. Back in 2010 I think you had more posters doing small status updates more frequently - with of course some still not posting anything. But in general I think more people in 2010 posted status updates. Also these were solely written updates. Now people tend to post with either an accompanying video or photo every time not just a short status update. Also, I think with the rise of Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat etc - Facebook has lost its potency although realistically- most people still have a Facebook account even if they're not particularly active on it.

Anyway - enough of that - I'm going back to MySpace. Anyone want to be in my 'Top 8?' Ok - don't all shout at once!!

proceeds to make like it's 2009

Younger people use Instagram and Snapchat for regular updates, and Tiktok for fun videos etc. The only people I see using Facebook for regular status updates are older people and then a few select younger ones.

Not that I’m a huge user of Instagram, but I’m far more likely to post there than fb. I have been on Facebook through high school and university for 14 years, and have almost 1000 ‘friends’ on there - I barely use it as it’s just too many people to be involved in seeing anything I might post, yet the thought of sorting through them all is horrendous 😂

I basically know the life stories/ day to day movements/ins and outs of random people’s jobs from Facebook. I don’t think people realise how identifiable they are from what they post - I could quite easily find some of these people whenever I wanted, and if I could, so could someone dangerous!

I myself had serious security issues on Facebook some years ago so since then I've changed accounts with a much more private one - so I completely agree with you re the info thing.

Obviously.

The entire demographic of FB has changed between then and now. I’m early 30s and don’t know anyone who still uses Facebook. FB leans much, much older now than it did before.
I think the over the top advertising put people off.

PuttingDownRoots · 06/04/2023 09:24

I've had Facebook since 2006? I think *when it was limited to students at a handful of universities.

Its unrecognisable from that!! We did actually use it to arrange study groups back then!

AFriendToEveryoneIsAFriendToNoOne · 06/04/2023 09:31

I barely use it anymore, you go on your feed and it's just full of adverts! Can't be arsed with that!

OnMyWayToSenility · 06/04/2023 09:31

I've had it from 2007 it's awful now, full of adverts and stupid pages I don't even follow!
Instagram is no better.

I love TikTok now

I am 50. I loved the novelty of reconnecting with old school and university friends in 2007-2009, learning how they were doing and seeing pics of their lives.

The wild kid from school who had become a teacher. The super-shy, plain kid who had married a looker and was working in PR. That kind of thing, as well as the more mundane/expected stuff such as the sporty kid who was working as a personal trainer and the sciencey kid who was working on an Alzheimer’s drug.

The novelty of that has obviously worn off, although it’s still nice to see good news updates. Some people are becoming grandparents, others are getting promotions, others are remarrying. But yes…the novelty has definitely worn off. And the adverting is irritating! Keep seeing and closing the same ones.
