To think my bank shouldn’t be able to stop me?

I’ve been trying to make a purchase for the last two months from Dior. It’s a one off treat that costs £600ish.

Every single time I’ve gone to buy it my payment gets declined. I’ve contacted my bank numerous times to ask if there was a block. After a month they finally admitted they had been blocking the payment. Confirmed block lifted but I’m still being declined.

I’ve now been told today that they will never allow me to purchase from Dior as I could say it’s fraud and sell the item on at full price. Surely if I have the money then I can spend it how I want??

Can you not pay in cash?

Jagoda · 05/04/2023 18:24

I would use a different card (or take cash out) and change my bank account.

Crazy response from them.

Kanaloa · 05/04/2023 18:25

How absolutely bizarre. I would close the account to be honest, and I would tell them why when I was doing it. What’s the use of a bank account that doesn’t let you spend your money as you want?

TheFlis12345 · 05/04/2023 18:25

That’s ridiculous? What bank is it?

Tealsofa · 05/04/2023 18:25

What??

5foot5 · 05/04/2023 18:25

There must be more to this surely? A bank can't just stop you buying an item if you have the funds.

TimeForMeToF1y · 05/04/2023 18:26

You need to give some more details

Can you not pay in cash?

Yeah I could it’s just I don’t live in a city with Dior.

Can you put it on a CC and pay it off at the end of the month?

Bizarre.

I get texts all the time asking me to confirm that I am authorizing a purchase. Either at an unusual location or for a large amount. I say yes. It goes through.

TimeForMeToF1y · 05/04/2023 18:28

MovinginCircless · 05/04/2023 18:27

Sure, but such as?

Is it an online purchase, from an authorised retalier, in the UK etc

BookishBabe · 05/04/2023 18:28

Can you pay with PayPal?

Neededanewuserhandle · 05/04/2023 18:28

Is it a card payment?

MovinginCircless · 05/04/2023 18:26

Yeah I could it’s just I don’t live in a city with Dior.

Couldn't you just use a credit card then pay the credit card off at the end of the month?

MovinginCircless · 05/04/2023 18:29

RudsyFarmer · 05/04/2023 18:27

Can you put it on a CC and pay it off at the end of the month?

All I have is a debit card, I could ask someone to buy it for me one a CC and transfer them the money but it’s just annoying as I should just be able to straight up use my own card.

LakieLady · 05/04/2023 18:29

How ridiculous.

It's fair enough if there's suddenly a lot of spending on high-end stuff, and it's unusual for them to suspect fraud, but a blanket ban on you buying from Dior is ludicrous.

Can you not put it on a credit card and then pay it off in full from your current account?

MovinginCircless · 05/04/2023 18:30

Neededanewuserhandle · 05/04/2023 18:28

Is it a card payment?

Debit Card - I don’t have and have never had a credit card.

Also what do they mean by selling it on at full price and reporting fraud? Why are your bank telling you that they think you are going to report your own transaction as fraud? There’s obviously more to it if they’re telling you they think you are going to basically commit fraud/theft.

MovinginCircless · 05/04/2023 18:32

Bizarre.

I get texts all the time asking me to confirm that I am authorizing a purchase. Either at an unusual location or for a large amount. I say yes. It goes through.

I spoke to the fraud team and went through all questions such as was I being forced to buy this, is it a legitimate website etc

I’m so angry that they’ve wasted so much of my time with them literally saying this isn’t fraud. When the entire time they had Dior on a high risk and would never have let me purchase from there.

OP posts:
davegrohll · 05/04/2023 18:33

Wtf how weird. How does it work when people want to buy anything high end then... or expensive tech !

BMW6 · 05/04/2023 18:33

I've never heard of a bank stopping a genuine purchase 🤔

I'm sure there's something going on OP - does the bank suspect the site you want to buy from is not genuine perhaps?

Wellillsayitifnooneelsewill · 05/04/2023 18:34

Bloody ludicrous! How can a bank stop you spending your own money where you want! Bloody Orwellian. Change banks and complain about them massively.

Sorry, failed to RTFT.

Get a credit card and use it for your Dior purchase. Last time I got a new one, it came in a matter of days. MSE has a thing where you can check which cards you'll be eligible for, so you don't fuck your credit rating by applying for cards that will turn you down.

And then look at getting a new current a/c, your bank sound ridiculous.
