To not understand why everyone is calling every school holiday "half term" all of a sudden?

It's not "half term" now. Half term is literally halfway through a term - summer/Easter/Christmas holidays mark the end of a term.

One half term break is in October, between the summer and Christmas holidays.

One half term break is in February, halfway between the Christmas and Easter holidays.

One half term break is in late may, halfway between the Easter and summer holidays.

Then you have actual holidays that come at the end of a term, and a new term starts when school goes back afterwards.

It seems like over the last couple of years I'm seeing all holidays referred to as "half term" and I know it's hardly a big deal and yes I'm also worried about nuclear war and child poverty but it still annoys me a bit!

I've never heard people refer to the holidays wrongly.

salcombebabe · 04/04/2023 11:46

I keep hearing the same OP! It’s pure laziness not to get it right 🤬

Abra1t · 04/04/2023 11:46

Drives me mad.

I've never heard people refer to the holidays wrongly.

First I heard my teenager and her friends doing it. Now adults are doing it all over FB 😬

"It's the half term break"

"Looking for something to do this half term"

"What are your plans in half term"

Gaaaaahhhhh

YANBU. Yes I’ve noticed this. Even more irritating when it’s referred to as “half terms” with the unnecessary “s”

Fairislefandango · 04/04/2023 11:48

YANBU. I heard one of my colleagues say it the other day. We are teachers!

Faircastle · 04/04/2023 11:49

YANBU, it's very irritating. I think some people don't bother to think about whether their utterances actually make any sense.

If this holiday is a half term break, then the term is far too long, especially for those of us who work in schools.

SunshineGeorgie · 04/04/2023 11:50

Unpopular opinion, but people are just a bit thick!

Notice it more these days

Marchforward · 04/04/2023 11:51

Yanbu. It’s every where and so irritating.

QuintanaRoo · 04/04/2023 11:51

I was thinking exactly this yesterday

Meandfour · 04/04/2023 11:51

Someone literally had this thread last week.

UthredofBattenberg · 04/04/2023 11:52

I can't get worked up about that

tulippa · 04/04/2023 11:53

I agree with you. It's definitely become more of a thing over the last couple of years. I know teachers who do it too. Very confusing and slightly irritating.

Theimpossiblegirl · 04/04/2023 11:53

It's annoying and wrong.
Like staycstion.

Someone literally had this thread last week.

I did not see that. I suppose it's just one to add to the list of threads that pop up frequently then!

UthredofBattenberg · 04/04/2023 11:52

I can't get worked up about that

But I've already chosen the misuse of "staycation" as my hill to die on!😁

CollieFIower · 04/04/2023 11:54

UthredofBattenberg · 04/04/2023 11:52

Well done you. A bastion of serenity! I'm just irritated by everything these days Grin

OP posts:
SmallAngryPenguinWoman · 04/04/2023 11:54

I don't know, but it bugs the hell out of me too!
I first noticed it last summer - what the fuck?? That's the end of the whole year, how can it be half term???
And breathe..... .......

TheHoover · 04/04/2023 11:54

I have heard this too. Confusing and incorrect

CollieFIower · 04/04/2023 11:55

I'm in my 40s though. I've gone 40 years without hearing this and now every other person seems to be making the same mildly annoying mistake. Why? Where's it come from?

OP posts:
gohomeroger1 · 04/04/2023 11:56

Yep grinds on me too. Notice it mostly with celebs on Instagram.

There was the opposite too, when someone posted in the October half term 'So proud of DS finishing his first term'

It's not difficult to understand

Tallulasdancingshoes · 04/04/2023 11:56

I’m with you OP. I’ve noticed this too and it gives me the rage! It’s just wrong. Plain and simple.

ariaknox · 04/04/2023 11:57

Not gonna lie
I've said half term a few times by mistake before correcting myself
Sometimes it's just an accident

FeltCarrot · 04/04/2023 12:00

I nearly started a thread on this too! Mathematically incorrect for every break to be a half term🤔😤. Half terms occur in October, February and May. End of term, Christmas, Easter and Summer.

CindersAgain · 04/04/2023 12:02

I suppose it’s half a term since the last break.

Annoys me too though.
