Yoghurt thrown over women in Iran shop

Blueisthecolour1 · 02/04/2023 09:56

This is just awful, footage of a man berating two women in a shop in Iran for not wearing hijabs. He then gets angrier and picks up yoghurt & throws it viciously over them in an unprovoked assault. He’s shoved out of the shop by the shopkeeper. From what I understand the two women have now been arrested for showing their hair in public.

Is it just me or are societies like this completely motivated & upheld by cultural misogyny? Why are women so oppressed in Iran by a male hierarchy- and in Afghanistan too. I don’t think it is just about religious scripture/belief in these countries, it’s about an ingrained culture of abusive men dominating & assaulting women & keeping them as second class citizens; the why escapes me. I guess it’s just so alien and shocking to me, it makes me wonder what these men are afraid of??

That this complete stranger thinks it’s ok to just assault two innocent women like this, because he’s taken offence at their breaking of the “rules.” I feel so bad for women who have to live under this oppression, it must be horrific

I don’t know why you have not had hundreds of posts agreeing with you. I found that news story extremely upsetting. The women were arrested! They were minding their own business and some man assaults them and yet they are arrested! It beggars belief. Their crime? To have their head uncovered. The man’s head was uncovered but that is obviously fine. Shocking and sickening treatment of half of the human race by oppressive and cock sure fucking bastard men in backward countries. How they justify their barbaric and ignorant attitudes by grossly misinterpreting fictional religious texts and set that to law astounds me. How are we still in this Stone Age mentality in 2023?

Botw1 · 03/04/2023 17:16

14% think you're being unreasonable?

Wtf?

Awumminnscotland · 03/04/2023 17:38

Astoundingly brave women all over Iran have been fighting back against the regime since a woman was beaten to death by police for not wearing Hijab. Many women have been shot in the eye, beaten and imprisoned. The more they fight back the angrier many men will get.

Nimbostratus100 · 03/04/2023 17:39

doesnt this man realise that the whole world is looking at him thinking you sad little inadequate, clearly of such low status within your own mind that you have to belittle people weaker than you to try and big yourself up a bit

Awumminnscotland · 03/04/2023 17:43

'My stealthy freedom' on fb is a blog by an amazing Iranian woman who the regime is trying to silence as she is raising awareness in the west of how women are fighting back.
This is huge in Iran right now. The more sunlight on how bad it is and how it's the regime not necessarily the will of the people.

"How they justify their barbaric and ignorant attitudes by grossly misinterpreting fictional religious texts and set that to law astounds me."

Just because you think someone elses faith is fictitious doesnt make it true.

Islam is a serious and well observed faith across the Middle East, Persia, Asia and beyond.

Take your racist goggles off and perhaps educate yourself before making such astoundingly ignorant remarks that denigrate observers of that faith. 🙄

@HelplessSoul

No comment on the horrific abuse of women in the name of that religion then?

All religions oppress in one way or another - whether against gender or non-observants.

But of course, Islam always gets a bad rap...

Botw1 · 03/04/2023 19:06

@HelplessSoul

Yes, they do.

But this thread is specifically about an Islamic country.

Would you care to comment on the horrific abuse of women in that country?

For what it’s worth I don’t think anyone should ever be forced to observe religion. I think the reason Islam is often mentioned is because realistically women are not routinely imprisoned, tortured, or attacked for not following Christian rules or Buddhist rules and so on. But if a woman was attacked for refusing to wear a cross necklace I absolutely would think it was despicable!

Realistically no country should have laws forcing people to observe religion. It isn’t even really about religion anyway, it’s about using religion to enforce patriarchal oppression.

Kanaloa · 03/04/2023 19:08

I agree with op that it must be horrific. I wonder what it would take for the culture to change/separate from these oppressive beliefs, and begin to allow human rights for their citizens, but sometimes I think we will never know.

nocoolnamesleft · 03/04/2023 19:08

Horrific misogyny.

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 03/04/2023 19:10

Oppression of women through violence it's disgusting.

Yes, they should thank their lucky stars they are not anywhere else other than in Iran being oppressed for choosing their own clothes because it's all exactly the same everywhere else and that isn't pretend or a lie or anything.

ConcordeOoter · 03/04/2023 19:23

I quoted/responded to the wrong post, sorry about that. ^

BRB have to try and arrange a dinghy to Iran so I can get away from the local vicar opressing me by being generally kind and not bothering me.

Ironically, Iran in the 60’s was one of the most progressive, forward thinking countries.

google pictures. Women in mini skirts, bright colours, modern hairstyles, hanging around universities and holding down jobs. It’s jarring.

DuesToTheDirt · 03/04/2023 19:52

You're right OP, it's nothing to do with religion. Religion is just an excuse for misogyny and oppression.

However, I really don't understand why they do this, apart from the usual Germaine Greer quote, which seems apt here - “Women have very little idea of how much men hate them."

WonderingWanda · 03/04/2023 19:57

Misogyny is a very real thing that women all over the world deal with daily. Sadly for some women cultural norms around some religions normalise it. It's appalling that this exists but we aren't so far ahead of other countries. It wasn't that long ago that women couldn't vote; Their husbands owned the house and all the possessions and marital rape did not exist because a woman gave consent when she was married. I don't think it's about religion at all, just men having power over women.

Stepuptowardsinfinity · 03/04/2023 20:02

Unfortunately, the unspeakable truth is that the countries with the worst mysogeny, enshrined in law, are Islamic countries. That is not to say that horrific abuses do not occur in other countries too, but to totally decouple Islam and mysogeny is disingenuous. Shouting racism simply obscures this and stops real debate from happening.

MrBenFan · 03/04/2023 20:03

Seem to be the week for throwing food at women who disagree with men 🤔

cupofteaandabiccyplease · 03/04/2023 20:07

Just goes to prove how pathetic some men really are. So inadequate they have to pick on women to make themselves feel better. So many countries are still stuck in the medival times way of thinking.
