Do your teens or young folks not call friends at all, or spend hours on calls doing normal life stuff?

I'm confused by all the references I see here, about the phone call dying and younger people not liking to talk on the phone.

My experience of younger people in the family and others (not my kids, I don't have any yet) all under 25 is they will be on their phone for literally hours, sometimes making dinner or gaming or whatever. Sometimes they don't even say much for ages Grin but they are doing stuff on their end of the phone, and the friend is doing their stuff as well, but then they do talk as well.

Is the art of the long call really dying out, in your experience?

My tween and teen have a couple of people they would be on the phone to for hours. But they use it for gaming not just general chit chat about your life.

13 year old daughter..constantly on facetime. I can't do anything in my own home because I feel like any number of 13 year old girls might be able to see or hear me 🤣. They don't always talk just kind of go about their business or play games together

Yes, that's my understanding too, is that there's a lot of doing something like gaming or studying while you're on the phone with somebody. And there can be long periods of silence and then bursts of chatting for a bit.

Whereas in my teens/ early twenties we were on the phone for hours chatting flat out and then hanging up and ringing each other back after 59 minutes to avail of the free calls on the landline Grin

Oh God this drives me nuts. Ds2 (12) does this often. Wanders into a room, has a chat with me. Then suddenly lifts his phone up and talks at the screen and I'm like WTF there's someone there!... yep, a whole group of 12 year old boys on Facetime just watching the ceiling go by as ds carries them around with him.
