AIBU for being really annoyed at DHL for posting my passport through the wrong letterbox?

It's an important document. If the passport service is going to contract them out to deliver passports then shouldn't they take care?

Sent me a photo of the passport being posted into someone's letter box, not mine! I think it must be one of my neighbours but we all have the same generic doors so I don't actually know.

This was 3 days ago and noone has brought it to us. I've knocked on a few doors, a few have said nope but most not answered.

What happens if it's lost, will I need to cancel it and pay again?

Have you contacted them to say they deliveree it to the wrong address?

Cherrybl0ssm · 01/04/2023 16:43

Complain on twitter.
Thats very bad and they should compensate you.

PassportDramahh · 01/04/2023 16:47

I send them a message yes but had no response so far.

It's a huge estate so could be anywhere

It's a serious security issue, surely?

Irridescantshimmmer · 01/04/2023 16:58

The nieghbour has broken the law by holding onto your parcel ( passport) and not returningnit to you.

Contact the nieghbour but don't tell them they've broken the law because you should get it quicker that way, as they may be less likely to cause a fuss.

Check out your rights regarding this because of a passport being a legal item, it should be in no one else's possession but yours.

When and if you get it back, check the envelope has not been tampered with just in case some trollope has decided to copy it.

She can't contact the neighbour because she doesn't know where the parcel is.

It's also a huge assumption that the neighbour is withholding her passport - maybe they're on holiday or the parcel is dumped on the table somewhere with a bunch of junk?

NumberTheory · 01/04/2023 17:07

I would contact the passport office.

About a decade ago I had someone else’s passport posted through my letter box. Got a phone call from the passport office (assume they had my number from when I applied for a passport.) chasing up after it. They were very forceful telling me that I couldn’t keep it, implying any delay in returning was illegal, etc., though I wasn’t trying to obstruct it just wasn’t convenient for me to sort it out quickly.

Neighbour hasn’t broken any law by having DHL put somebody else’s mail through their letterbox. Which is all we know that’s happened. Neighbour can’t keep the passport for themselves. But they aren’t obliged to proactively fix DHL’s mistake.

If you all have the same generic doors what is the feature that identifies it as not being your door?

Countquack · 01/04/2023 17:55

There not being a passport on the inside of it?

romdowa · 01/04/2023 17:56

Surely the courier company knows where it was delivered? I'd start by asking them

The passport did not appear on the other side of it?

How rude.

I was meaning is there a certain doormat or plant pot or spiders web that she could track down. Obviously.

AbreathofFrenchair · 01/04/2023 18:02

I'd love to know the answer. My childs passport was delivered, i think, 13 weeks ago yet we dont have it. DHL sent picture putting it through the door of a block of flats, on a different round. I knocked at the door, showed them the picture, they are insistent they don't have it. DHL say I signed for it, despite me telling that it's not my signature and the picture showing it being posted, so how could I have signed for it?!

Contact Passport Office who say they cant issue a new one as they need the current one sending back, I said it had been lost so I don't have it to send back, they are taking DHL side and saying it has been delivered and signed for. I've emailed the picture and one of my own front door and apparently all that proves is that DHL followed their side and delivered.

We've now got to apply and pay for a replacement which I have now been told the wait time is 6 months due to strikes starting this week.

We are due to travel August and have been told it's very unlikely it will be here on time and we shouldn't have booked a holiday with no passport. I wouldn't mind but we sent it off before Christmas for a renewal!

Let me know how you get it sorted!! DHL are utterly shit!!

This 😂

Plus the outside of the letterbox is silver. I replaced mine so mine is all brass.
But the standard ones, which 90% of the doors still have, are the same as photo.

I'm just glad I don't need it very soon.

Imagine getting an emergency one sent out and that happening.

This is the photo left by them, I swear they make it as vague as possible on purpose 😂😂

Oh my god, don't,

We are travelling in June. I was so relieved I got it done just before the rush.

I really hope you get yours sorted too. Absolute nightmare.

Share the pic on local facebook or next door page. Every week at least one similar post appears on ours.

LadyIckenham · 01/04/2023 18:14

Hmm, I had the same thing this week. Difference was that the DHL man fessed up and came over with me to try to get it back. He only noticed it was the wrong door number after putting it through the letter box (you had one job....).

Managed to get it back the following day and he came over to apologise and to th neighbours but I was none to impressed for the same reasons as you (although didn't say it to him, he did his best to put it right).

We had the same thing fifteen years ago with DH's passport. They never fessed up to it then though and we had to get a new one; as a PP said, it's not the easiest process when they are adamant it's been delivered.

But if you need support to make it clear to Passport office that things get misdelivered, feel free to DM me.

How is op going to do that when she doesn't know which house??

jamimmi · 01/04/2023 18:19

Try to contact DHL and ask where the satnav tracker had the van when it delivered..I think they are linked. We found out missing toilet this way as it had bee left on the road behind us. Luckily the neighbours were very honest and ringing DHL when we popped it. It had been dumped on a drive with generic block paving!

jamimmi · 01/04/2023 18:20

Popped in to get it!

SafariAnimal · 01/04/2023 18:35

I sent a complaint to the Passport Office a few weeks ago about their poor delivery service.
In my case I actually received the passport, but it was just shoved through the letterbox with no checking it was the right address (we’ve had mix-ups previously) or signature required.
Then when trying to find out when I’d receive DC’s birth certificate back I discovered that according to the computer system at the Passport Office they hadn’t posted the passport out yet! I’d had it a week by this point, and they clearly had no idea where it was!
DC’s birth certificate arrived the following day, again with no security checks, and in a crumpled envelope. Given I had paid extra for secure delivery I was seriously unimpressed.
Complaint went in, I was told they’d get back to me in 15 working days and 5 weeks later I’m still waiting…

To be fair the neighbour might not be home. So not necessarily broken the law. Can't help it if they are away for the week or whatever.

PassportDramahh · 01/04/2023 20:54

I have it.

Went knocking again and someone had it. They didn't realise it was a passport and assumed we had a card through with their address and were waiting for us to come get it.
