Can I have wine if I am taking Naproxen?

It's Friday and I would love a glass or two of wine, but have taken naproxen for period pain.

Should I just wait until tomorrow though?

Surely you should be checking the medicine leaflet rather than asking us?

Well the medicine bottle says something about more than three drinks per day on this medication being at risk for stomach bleeding. But it can also cause stomach bleeding anyway by itself.

I drank wine last Saturday night, had two naproxen on Thursday, none yesterday and one tablet today and trying to get a realistic view as to how dramatically my risk of a GI bleed will go up if I have a couple of glasses of wine tonight.

that should say, I had two tablets on Wednesday, not Thursday...

Whilst drinking alcohol in moderation with naproxen is generally considered to be safe, as an extra precaution; users should wait 12 to 17 hours after taking Naproxen before drinking alcohol.

OneTC · 31/03/2023 21:47

That said, and YMMV, but I would, just don't drink loads

mynameiscalypso · 31/03/2023 21:49

I take NSAIDs on a daily basis and have a drink whenever I want.

HeadacheEarthquake · 31/03/2023 21:50

You'll be OK for a couple just listen to your body.

Naprox doesn't work as well for me as a large barolo and a slice of Stilton

mynameiscalypso · 31/03/2023 21:50

Do you also take omeprazole alongside the naproxen?

SeaToSki · 31/03/2023 21:51

I take it daily and have a glass of wine every evening. No problems here.

Yes. Ffs.

Do you also take omeprazole alongside the naproxen?

No. I only take it for 1 - 2 days over my period. I was under the impression omeprazole is for if people take it more regularly?

If you do I'd stick to one glass

piedbeauty · 31/03/2023 22:02

Yes. Ffs.

The instructions on the bottle aren't clear, they don't say not to drink, they're a bit vague.

However, it sounds like it should be safe to have a glass of wine.

NO!!

When I was on Naproxen the doctor said it strips away the usual protective stomach lining and so alcohol can cause a lot of damage to the stomach and give you ulcers so easily.

LongtallStory · 31/03/2023 22:31

I found it made me feel faint when I took it and went out for drinks. It was within a couple of hours of taking it though and I think I'd had a strong dose. I was quite dizzy.

Teaandcaaaaake · 31/03/2023 22:32

Hmm. I don't feel fantastic to be honest so think I'll avoid the wine.

I take Lansaprazole and Naproxen daily and am drinking gin right now 😊
