To feel scared of being burgled?

The last few weeks there has been some dodgy activity in our area that has made me quite worried. I was coming home a couple of weeks ago and saw two men in balaclavas come out from the side of (I think) our neighbours house but it was dark and I was quite far away. Anyway, they were clearly up to no good and having a good look around. Reported to 101 who came and had a look around.

Kind of forgot about it all until yesterday when I heard a loud smash at about 2am. This morning I leave my house and see next doors window has been smashed in. No excuse of course but they had made themselves an easy target by placing a handbag in the window very often and I'm guessing someone's just had it. I've come home tonight and I think I'm the only one in (I live in a house share) as others cars/bikes are not here. I'm just so scared and can't seem to relax enough to fall asleep.

I have kept landlord in the loop about it all but tonight I'm just feeling so anxious. I know logically I should be fine, all windows and doors are secure and my bedroom door is locked but every time I hear a slight noise I go into panic. I should also add we live on a main road which reassures me slightly but it's round the back that I worry about. I have my final uni exams coming up soon and I really could do without this stress on top. Does anyone have any advice?

Am I being unreasonable and overreacting? Just looking for a hand hold I guess :(

Sorry to hear this, but it sounds like you're doing all the right things. Try some calming sleep guide meditation thing it might help?

Don't have much practical advice other than leave some lights on for a week or so, would make people think you were up and awake and be a deterrent. I do that when I am home alone and a bit scared x

"they placed a handbag"
Can you please explain?

polkadelo · 24/03/2023 02:51

Thank you for your responses. @Sylviarobbo I had thought of doing that but advice seems to change wherever you look. Apparently leaving lights on during night is what people do when they are out and want to look like they're in so best not to do it?!

As it's all student houses on our road the downstairs room is often a bedroom. The curtain doesn't quite reach the end of the window and quite clearly on display the person has left a black handbag on the desk for months on and off. It was the exact window that was smashed through so I'm just putting two and two together
