Handed in my notice, AIBU to lie and say I have another job lined up when I don't?

I've handed in my notice at work because I'm not happy there, and my mental health is suffering. I had reached out to my manager for support but not much changed and I just think it's a poor fit. So I've handed in my notice and am job hunting. I told my manager I had another job lined up as they were trying to persuade me to extend my notice period beyond what's in my contract.

AIBU to lie and say I have another job lined up to avoid any awkward conversations? I'm not close to any of my colleagues and don't have LinkedIn etc so they wouldn't know. If they did find out I would just say the job fell through.

First of all, hope you get better soon xxx

Secondly, What happens when you find a new role and you need a reference from them? They'll be pondering why you asked them and not your "new" manager.

Thirdly, say whatever it takes for an easy life..maybe suggest you're freelancing / volunteering for a bit? This way it'll keep the doors open for a reference

Lastly, I'm sure your colleagues will care less than you think x

You'll need a reference from them, so no. Lying to an employer is always a bad idea.

The reference will come from our HR department rather than my manager, and my notice period is quite long so hopefully by the time my notice period is up I will eventually have found something.

Can you say you have holidays booked, or “a private family commitment I prefer not to discuss”?

BluetheBear · 20/03/2023 21:40

Just say no. You're leaving because of the effect of the job on your mental health so working a longer notice period is not an option. Put it in a email to HR if that's easier for you.

Oh I lied my arse off leaving one job. I told bastard micro manager I had a very specific job for a globally renowned organisation. It was feasible but still he was quite impressed/angry about it.

He won’t know it was a lie. And it still makes me giggle thinking that he imagines that’s where I am 😂

Whiteroomjoy · 20/03/2023 22:14

Just say , if you’ve asked for support due to poor mental health and not got any, that you either leave in accordance with your notice period, or you will have to be signed off sick. Doubt they’ll push you after they know that

im not sure why you didn’t do that anyway ? Recovering from mental health issues can take a while and you will have no income. Why didn’t you get singed off for a while and instead give your notice in?
