These are things which I grew up with and loved. Now the language Enid Blyton used is not acceptable to the woke ways, and the Brownies is name changing to the Embers (in Canada)
These are just two examples of ridiculous wokeness.
I am a very open person, and am open to the beliefs of all, and sexual identity of all. But honestly, all if these rules, and that people cannot decide for themselves any more if something is okay or not is completely bonkers. AIBU???

Canada is completely lost. Irredeemably, it seems.

Embers 🙄

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 19/03/2023 20:43

Can you define "wokeness"?

cardibach · 19/03/2023 20:46

What’s the connection between Enid Blyton got to do with the Brownies? And how is it to do with ‘woke’ ideas? They’re neared after characters from folk tales.

Being told how to think.

cardibach · 19/03/2023 20:47

Sorry thats a bit mangled. Think it’s clear what I mean though

cardibach · 19/03/2023 20:47

mellongoose · 19/03/2023 20:46

Being told how to think.

Well that’s not woke at all so maybe have a rethink.

Topseyt123 · 19/03/2023 20:48

Embers? Why are Brownies changing their name anyway, let alone to Embers?

I liked Enid Blyton as a child. I can see though why some of the language in some stories has had to change, but as you say, common sense is also needed.

misskatamari · 19/03/2023 20:49

Don’t really have much opinion on the Brownies stuff, as I haven’t read anything about it or the reasons - however some Enid Blyton stuff is very outdated and right to be updated. I have a vintage faraway tree book (can’t remember which it is) that I was so excited to read to dd, and vividly remember being so shocked when it started banging on about going to golliwog station etc! Just completely unacceptable in this day and age!

Woke is the new political correctness. Which people didn’t like because it meant they couldn’t be racist etc.

Albiboba · 19/03/2023 20:52

I don’t see how either of those things mean that no one can ever think for themselves?

Things change, get over it.
If the people running Brownies found it problematic they are allowed to change the name. Frankly they can change it to Embers for whatever reason they want!

There are definitely elements of Enid Blyton that aren’t acceptable today and they should come with context Imo.
Again I don’t see how that means you can’t think what you want to think.

It comes across a little like ‘you can’t say anything that’s days!’ 9/10 times that means one thing.

There's nothing remotely racist about Brownies.

No there isn’t. I do think it’s absurd they felt they had to change it.

TheMatriarchy · 19/03/2023 20:56

Wokeness used to be an analogy for political correctness. But it's been co-opted by an authoritarian regime that dictates nonsense like men are women if they say they are. Sad really.

Conkersinautumn · 19/03/2023 20:57

Woke - a description used by people to reject social change because their ability to adapt to the new is impaired for some reason.

Albiboba · 19/03/2023 20:59

ReadersD1gest · 19/03/2023 20:53

There's nothing remotely racist about Brownies.

The Canadian branch found the name was a barrier to members of certain communities joining and therefore made the decision to change the name. Seems odd to argue with that.

BiscuitsBiscuitsEverywhere · 19/03/2023 20:59

Oh, it's such a shame that many people disapprove of racist language and ideas (as in Enid Blyton's books). How very sad for you that you feel uncomfortable expressing your racism openly. My heart bleeds.

BTW, the word "woke" doesn't mean what you think it means.

x2boys · 19/03/2023 21:00

Enid.Blyton, was very of her time,I can totally see why t
Some of her writing is problematic
I'm sure the Brownies were originally going to be called Rosebuds?
I think.i.remember reading it in my Brownie guide handbook🤔

Really? what do you mean by "men are women*?

Ceryneianhind · 19/03/2023 21:01

Have you read any Enid Blyton as an adult??

It's absolutely shitty and racist!! Yes, I loved it as a child, but it has no place in today's world

Part of it is destroying books which don't fit your rigid, biased agenda, a bit like that man in Germany in the 1930s and look how well that turned out.

Jesus Christ. It’s actually people like you are problematic.

OP is upset that people are acknowledging the racist language in a book is racist.

And you’re comparing highlighting that “the language Enid Blyton used is not acceptable” is in any way comparable to hitler.

Utterly depressing that people like
you exist in the world.

Bagzzz · 19/03/2023 21:09

Change from Brownies this is one paragraph- lots more hereJust looked up the rationale on the Girl Guiding website canada.

How is the old branch name harmful when it comes from folklore?

The name of this branch is not being changed because of its origins in folklore. This change is being made because of how this name makes girls and women feel. We heard from racialized girls that they didn’t like being called a Brownie. This was a name that made them feel extremely uncomfortable, prompted teasing and racist comments and was a barrier to feeling that they belong at Girl Guides. Continuing to use a name that we have been directly told by girls has caused them harm would go against everything that we stand for as an organization.
