Interesting NDN has one of these and it’s always in the garage 🙈

Honda Jazz. Ultra-reliable, cheap to fix and service, you can often find low mileage second hand ones as beloved of older careful drivers. Loads of space inside, especially with rear seats down.

Toyota or Honda anything. Two 13yr old Toyotas with 130k each still chugging along. Civic back in 2000s did 190k.

Based on what you need it's Auris (Corolla) or Civic, both have bulletproof reliability. Favour service history over low miles and get the best spec you can, the price difference between the top and bottom of the range is far less than when they were new.

If you can afford to run one the Avensis is cracking value for money but high running costs and tax by modern standards and a bit of a boat.

Honestly these days I'd be reluctant to buy a car privately due to the smorgasbord of sensors waiting to go wrong and 5k isn't going to go very far at a main dealer.

Independent garage probably the way to go. Something like this maybe? Used cars are ridiculously overpriced right now. Twelve year old family cars at 5k and up is crazy.
