to feel a bit upset my birthday was not acknowledged at work

I work in a team of 20 and every time it is someones birthday we always sign a card and the manager usually buys a small gift from the team.
Last week was my birthday and it wasn't acknowledged, I didn't work but other staff who haven't worked on their birthdays always receive the card before.
The manager has a list of everyones birthdays so there's no way he didn't know.
I feel a bit upset and that maybe the team don't like me and didn't want to sign the card(I know it sounds pathetic).

That’s shut. Have you been in the office since?

People really go this? In a team of 20? So n average every 2-3 weeks you are all signing a card?

Mot surprising it occasionally gets missed if it’s happening so often. I wouldn’t take it personally.

I'd be tempted to quietly ask your manager if team birthday cards/gifts have been discontinued? I'm sure it's just an oversight but good to raise the question. 🌹

Could you casually mention to someone something that you received or did for your birthday, just in conversation, might make, someone realise you've been missed.

GoodChat · 14/03/2023 20:22

Maybe they just didn't realise it was your birthday. I wouldn't take it personally.

WishIWasACavewoman · 14/03/2023 20:25

I'm sorry you got missed, but I love workplaces for bring a place to avoid all the stressful tokens and obligations of home life and definitely would be doing everything I could to avoid keeping this tradition alive. Much better to celebrate team successes.

JenniferBarkley · 14/03/2023 20:25

I'd say this is far more likely to be a mishap rather than anything deliberate. Poor manager having to do this every couple of weeks! Easy to miss one, and probably so fed up they don't care (regardless of whose birthday if is).

TomatoSandwiches · 14/03/2023 20:29

Make a cake and write on it,
" Happy Belated Birthday to me! " with a big sad face emoji with a single tear in one eye.
Do it on a Monday so they have all week to say sorry and make it up to you.

VickyEadieofThigh · 14/03/2023 20:30

Is this the pretend workplace area in Reception class? Otherwise, I really think it's ludicrous to be making a fuss of adults' birthdays in the workplace on a routine basis.

DomesticShortHair · 14/03/2023 20:31

I wouldn’t say a thing. Until the next persons birthday card is sent around, and then I’d make it very well known. Not that I’d be remotely bothered about my birthday being acknowledged, but for the double standard.

LlynTegid · 14/03/2023 21:01

If it could be the start of an end to this, I'd be glad for you. A quiet word with your manager to ask if it has been discontinued would be my suggestion.

Bagzzz · 14/03/2023 21:07

I’d be sad as well. It isn’t about whether it’s good or bad acknowledging birthdays but about not being included in a workplace where it does happen.

Sweetener12 · 15/03/2023 06:20

I wouldn't say anything, but I'd definitely be upset because when a set tradition suddenly leaves you out, it's hard to not take personally, though this is most likely not the case. We have smartshow 3d video cards emailed to birthday people and the sudden change would be a surprise for sure.

KarmaStar · 15/03/2023 13:38

💐belated Happy Birthday!😀
I empathise,it's not about the actual card/gift is it?it's about not being liked.
it was probably an oversight and manager/team would be feeling awful if they knew.
try not to take it to heart, either ask manager if tradition has stopped or buy a big bag of doughnuts and take into office, dump on desk and say cheerfully and loudly well if you lot won't celebrate for me I'll do it myself!😀
