Do you believe in bad omens? Was this one or me just overthinking?

Went for an interview yesterday, my car wouldn’t start in the morning! Never had an issue with my car before ever, no sign of any issues the previous day. I still managed to get eldest to school and youngest to nursery in different setting and be in time for the interview. Walking into the building I tripped! I’m not usually clumsy and wasn’t overly nervous but I tripped and fell.

the interview went well and it’s obvious they’ve struggled yo find finding for a long time as they keep advertising and they told me directly they’ve struggled. A worker in different department very helpfully told me I shouldn’t consider working there and asked me “why go you think they haven’t found anyone yet? I round run now”. I accepted the job as it’s just for 3 months and I have nursery fees to pay. The job definitely pays more than I’m getting now.

am I bu to think the morning was full of omens or just bad luck? Btw I got back yesterday and tried the car again before calling the AA and guess what - it started with no issue! So there was nothing wrong with my car. No idea why it wouldn’t start in the morning, it was actually very mild weather so can’t blame the weather.

I’m so sorry for the typos!

OP, I suspect English is not your first language, do your live overseas? In which case your culture may focus more on omens/luck etc?

Mercurial123 · 11/03/2023 04:28

No, it's just unfortunate.

WandaWonder · 11/03/2023 04:32

Same with turning computers on and off clears up issues, sure maybe no logical explanation but can't say it's an omen either

This is an odd assumption! I can’t see anything to suggest that English isn’t the OP’s first language? A couple of typos but not incorrect English?

Thank you! I was confused by that comment too.

No, because omens don't exist. But you've been clearly warned off working there by an existing employee, that is worth ten times anything a so called omen could tell you and I'd have second thoughts based on that.

Where was it mild yesterday?!

Bit weird/prejudiced to assume this, loads of people in the UK (wrongly IMO) believe in omens or similar.

I agree with this.

donttellmehesalive · 11/03/2023 07:47

The car and the trip don't strike me as omens. Maybe you were looking for them. Surely you've had two bad things happen on a morning before? Splashed by a car and dropped your shopping, or something?

I'd be a lot more concerned by their difficulty to recruit and warnings from staff - cast iron reasons not to take it.

What an odd response
The English have lots of superstitions etc (black cats, ladders, salt over shoulder...), so no need for that barely-veiled barb

LookItsMeAgain · 11/03/2023 08:31

If the job has been advertised a few times and no one has been successful yet, along with a staff member suggesting you to run and not take it, would be red flags to me.

CalistoNoSolo · 11/03/2023 08:35

Omens don't exist, they belong in the dark ages like the loons who believe in them. The staff member you spoke to sounds like an arse - highly unprofessional and may have an agenda. You have a better paying job for three months, which gives you time to find an even better paying job. Congrats.

LesserBohemians · 11/03/2023 08:40

You’re just being superstitious, OP. We’re you rattled by the staff member saying that? Personally, if it’s only for three months, and you need the money, I’d risk it. I would seriously consider the issue of why they’ve had such difficulty recruiting, though.

Agree, such a weird comment!!

Mummy2to2 · 11/03/2023 09:49

Thank you everyone! I agree I think I was rattled by the comment. It’s only for 3 months what’s the worst that could happen. Right now I’m earning just enough to cover nursery fee with like a tenner left over this job is over double what I’m earning now. It suits me as my little one will be in full time education by September so I can look for something better then. I am a bit scared off by the comments the colleague made. I’m the type that will stick through something no matter how bad it gets so I know I will see these 3 months through but I’m a little scared if I’m honest.

Maybe the colleague had applied for it as a promotion?

What has reseting a computer got to do with omens?
