Calpol and benylin cough medicine

Hi everyone I come to you wise people again asking if I can give my son a dose of calpol and a dose of benylin?
He's almost 2 and has I can only assume the same cold as me although he seems fine in himself, eating well if a bit less than usual.
Has a blocked snotty nose and dribbling because of said nose but has a cough. Not chesty or hoarse but I wonder if I could give him both medicines to help him?

Cough medicines don’t really do anything
if your little one has a cold then a saline nasal wash can help unblock their nose which can make them feel better

rubyslippers · 07/03/2023 07:42

Also pretty sure with benilyn there are age restrictions

Bodybags · 07/03/2023 07:42

Does he have pain?

If he does, then the paracetamol.

dementedpixie · 07/03/2023 07:45

If the benylin doesn't contain paracetamol then it's fine. Just check it's OK for his age group

Bog · 07/03/2023 07:51

Thanks all, I won't bother with the cough medicine then.
There's a children's dry cough and sore throat syrup but calpol does for a sore throat too so it was just me being overly cautious.
He's fine in himself just a bit grumpy but he's sat colouring and watching Bing. I'm guessing another day indoors with TV and quarantined from in law's.

Cough medicines that contain glycerin do help soothe dry coughs in particular, I think it's false to say they don't do anything! They don't speed up the duration of being unwell with a cough but they can ease the urge to cough.

TheRookie · 07/03/2023 08:00

If the benylin is suitable for his age, then it'll just be sugar syrup basically so yes can be taken with Calpol if he needs it. Although if he's just happily pottering about, I wouldn't bother with Calpol.

Bronchostop is the best cough medicine for kids that I've found.

Thanks again. I gave him a small dose before I brushed his teeth. It's a shame he isn't keen on pineapple as I read that's good for sore throat.

Cover his feet in vicks and cover them, when he goes to sleep.

Tsp of Raw honey is good op. It's soothing and antibacterial. Hope he feels better soon 💐

Yes I put some honey in his cereal as I don't want to damage his teeth.

This won't happen. He HATES his feet being touched. It's a nightmare doing his toenails 🤣

Honey in his cereal won't have the same effect. You are not going g to damage his teeth with a few teaspoons of honey over a day or two.

Ah OK. Sorry I promised my wife he wouldn't have bad teeth ie loads of fillings like me.

What are the active ingredients?
The paracetamonl in Calpol will bring down fever and help with pain
Looks like Benalyin is only glycerin to soothe the throat and that won't act with paracetamol. Just don't give anything else with paracetamol in.

As long as his teeth are being brushed regularly it will be fine. Sometimes you just have to balance the here.and now with the longer term. Honestly don't worry about a few spoons of honey.

Bog · 07/03/2023 08:42

Would it be bad for him to have a few days of just eating comfort food, such as rusks and organix gingerbread men? He will have pasta for dinner and I'll offer veggies and some kind of protein for lunch.

You're really overthinking! If he is off his food, just let him be. Offer small amounts of stuff he likes, make sure he is drinking plenty and rest up.

My son loves on mini cheddars and cows milk for 2 weeks when he had covid in January!
