To ask whether a lingering chesty cough is the norm with croup?

DS was diagnosed with croup on Monday, he had a dose of steroids and doesn’t have the barking cough as now and his breathing is sounding much better but he’s still got a bad, chesty cough. He rattles with every breath. Is it normal to have this after croup? I don’t want to keep taking him to the drs, just wondering how long a chesty cough is okay for before you should start to worry!

How did you get on OP? I’m trawling mumsnet to look for any help or similar experiences. Took my DS to an and e last night with croup - got steroids and sent home. They’ve been in his system about 10 hours now. Strider has gone but barking cough is still there. When my DD had croup years ago she seemed ‘cured’ of all symptoms after a dose of steroid so I’m a bit concerned DS still has the bark! Just wondering how you got on?

My son used to get croup quite a lot. He would take a week or two to recover. Whereas my daughter had it once and was better once she had steroids. I hope they feel better soo

Thanks for sharing your experience @Cric - helps to know it’s common for DC to respond differently! DS is still coughing to the point he is making himself sick at points (he’s always had a sensitive gag reflex) … but the barky sound has eased this evening so we are going in the right direction
