To think the energy increase in April is the last straw.

Just how the hell are we supposed to cope with this. I’m so stressed with everything. I have grown up kids who I fear for more than anything. Where’s it going to end. Life’s just so bloody hard. Sorry I know it’s the same for us all, I just needed to vent.

I am so sick of it too.

NinetyNineRedBalloonsGoBy · 28/02/2023 20:25

I just found out that my energy bill has gone up to £509 a month 😱

Sadly it's not a mistake. It was £135 a year ago.

woodhill · 28/02/2023 20:29

That's ridiculous

Sellsellseller · 28/02/2023 20:33

Yet still no riots. We British really just take it with no resistance

Deanandthellhounds · 28/02/2023 20:34

I managed to 'prepare' for last year by stocking up on tins and dried foods while the prices were still 'normal'
I wish I could have convinced my dh to go bigger because we underestimated the amount of beans we eat and now they have almost doubled in price.
I still have a couple of bits from before bit even the dried pulses and lentils to bulk up stews and the like are more money.

We used to spend about 60 on a shop, now it's 90-100 every week or 2.

the electricity has been OK. we are spending the same despite using way less, I don't really think I could do anymore to cut down on use (more cold dinners in the summer, but for now I want a warm meal)
if it goes up by lots again I'm gonna be in trouble. and I just had to replace 2 BIG kitchen appliances which had to go on the credit card. 😅 fucked.

Okunevo · 28/02/2023 20:34

Remember it will be on summer bills initially, I've read that the cap could drop to £2500 in July so it may not affect next winter.

BMW6 · 28/02/2023 20:35

Surely we all need the incentive to cut down on our energy use because of climate change?

Anyone with these huge bills needs to ask themselves wtf are they using all this energy on?

We are ALL supposed to be using much less to save the planet and your children's futures. Isn't that so?

My high bills are due to equipment for my disabled child. So I am protecting my child’s future, thank you.

OhmygodDont · 28/02/2023 20:43

My hearings been at 18 a pretty meh temperature I’d say. Not exactly sat in my undies drinking cocktails expecting cheap heating. Just enough to not be sat shivering. Our dd is up for review I’m dreading it.

Thing is it's affecting those who can't cut down any more. My energy has gone from £60 (fixed rate) to £150 for gas/electric which is more than 10% of my wage
Add mortgage, council tax, water etc onto that plus my food has gone from £160pm to £240
My wages haven't changed and there is no more money so I don't know what else people like me can do

Ones with huge bills who can afford it won't bother to cut back

iloveyankeecandle · 28/02/2023 20:44

What the hell can we do about all of this though??

Okunevo · 28/02/2023 20:47

@Rebel2 We can't cut back further either. Our last two bills have both been over £100 when our gas usage has halved and electricity is down 20%.

FrostyFifi · 28/02/2023 20:48

Possibly a damp badly insulated house that they can't afford to improve or don't actually own?

I was already stingy with electric but I've cut the gas down a lot too
On average I use £3 a day electric and £2 gas

Today I had a shower and cooked a pasta bake and it's at £6.50 for today which is the highest it's been since I had the smart meter fitted

picklemewalnuts · 28/02/2023 20:49

But you'll need less because it's Summer. It'll be fine.

I don’t think those with big usage are bothered by price increase. It will always be those who already keep 18 degrees at home.

We are in the same basket but families such as ours are always forgotten about.

I really wish we could cut back for many reasons, however if I did my child would probably end up in hospital and me on a register for neglect.

Problem is that the energy companies still want their profit, so we can use less energy but they’ll still do whatever they can to make as much as they can.

girlfriend44 · 28/02/2023 20:54

Yep really bad. Everything keeps going up.

Aye rioting. That’ll help. Smash up shops, and peoples property (other peoples of course, not yours) destroy livelihoods, injure police officers just doing their jobs, and perhaps terrify a few elderly people or kids whilst we are it. Yup, that’ll teach the energy bosses/government sat in their super secure houses and offices, insured to the eyeballs.

I despair of some people, I really do.

I’m using my energy on keeping warm. And drying clothes. Is that Ok with you?

Keeping at a warm temperature when it’s 1 degree outside is a necessity, not an incentive ‘to cut use’

People need to keel warm for health reasons. Not because of sanctimonious holier than thou reasons.🙄

Theunamedcat · 28/02/2023 20:57

Some people have discovered they have malfunctioning meters and the companies refuse to fix or replace them instead they act like its normal £5000 on a two bed terrace that isn't a flipping drug den

The support groups are going nuts trying to resolve situations one has gone all the way to the ombudsman they were charging them for a previous tenants debt ombudsman said no remove it refund the excess charges etc and the energy company.....did nothing instead they started the debt collection process AGAIN people are getting into real debt and it's not always the customers fault

Nixnjj1 · 28/02/2023 20:57

Things have to give. I have been waiting for a hospital appointment since July of last year. Appointment in March but not enough time to play with budget to afford to get there, so have to cancel it.
