DD2 has no idea what to do at uni. 1 year of school left. I'm sure lots of kids feel the same. AIBU to ask what you do? Is it worth it? And how did you get there?

I'll start.

I'm early 50s. Retrained as an instructional designer 2 years ago. Was a HE teacher. Love my job. Work from home. Earn approx €50k at an NGO. Hope to make CLO (Chief Learning Officer) by end of career. Should be €100k +.

I'd definitely say it's a degree worth doing. Really interesting. Fairly creative too.

I have a degree in Illustration and haven't had an art based career though I make pocket money on the side with some drawings sold, I barely have the time to do that.

I Instagram stalked a few people from my degree and they all look to be in similar positions. Working full time in menial jobs and making art here and there on the side.

Compare this with a friends OH who doesn't have an art degree and makes a living selling his art online, and a woman I know who is entirely self taught in graphic design and works for herself creating logos for businesses. Both free of student debt, both more successful.

I can only speak in terms of art degrees but I'm of the opinion now that you don't need a degree to be a successful artist anymore you can teach yourself and then promote yourself on Instagram.
