In the last couple of hours I’ve had a headache, scratchy throat and sneezing out the blue, I’ve got a really busy week coming up really can’t afford to have a stinking cold! Any tips of how to stop it in its tracks… please?!

And eat teaspoons of good honey

Vloader23 · 25/02/2023 20:16

No.

Those saying they had less severe colds or prevented them developing are a great example of confirmation bias

You could try garlic soup? This has worked for me, but beware that you will stink to high heaven for a couple of days.

Badger1970 · 25/02/2023 20:22

I swear by high dose vitamin C - the 1000mg ones, I'll take one morning and one night. DH swears by first defence but I've not tried it.

I gargle with Cordosyl (sp) mouthwash. Do Not Swallow ! Do try and get it as low in your throat as you can. It tastes like you imagine Domestos would taste ! However, I’ve warded off so many colds in this manner, I can only believe there’s something in in that kills enough bacteria to make it work.

Thank you everyone! I have actually got some first defence in the cupboard so I’ve given it a spray! @Rhymingrooster ive heard of Coldzyme, is it too late to try if I’m already sneezing? Literally the sneezes started out of no where, I only had a cold a couple of weeks ago I ll be really annoyed if I’ve got another one so soon 🙈

No it’s not! It helps even if you have all the symptoms!

Another vote for gargling warm salt water, seems to have worked well for me if done at the very first sign of a sore throat.

C1239 · 25/02/2023 21:01

Thank you everyone, fingers crossed I can shift it before it starts!

A cold is viral, not bacterial. 😐

You can't make it go away entirely, but you can shorten it and keep the symptoms down.

  • a megadose of zinc (75mg or so - triple the suggested daily dose) right at the onset is pretty much the only supplement with any evidence base to it.
  • nasal rinses (netipot) several times a day
  • gargling with an oral disinfectant
  • lots of warmth and an overnight sweat cure - double pj's and double duvet
  • if at all possible get some bedrest tomorrow.

Sorry, this is a chat forum not phd research. The OP asked what could tips we could share to help and I can categorically say that Boots First Defence has helped me, and family members, not to get a cold.
It’s only a fiver and has no adverse effects so if OP wants to give it a go then no harm
done.

It’s a chat forum where someone posted a link to peer-reviewed research and lied about what it said. I’m perfectly within etiquette to politely point that out. Nothing wrong with saying “I did X and it helped me”, it’s very different from lying about scientific research to convince the OP that certain products can have certain outcomes (that they scientifically do not help with).

Oh, FFS, get over yourself. "Lied" indeed... Here's the link I meant to post, I was looking for it yesterday and copied a wrong one.

Another First Defence advocate, here.

My understanding was that it forms a gluey patch at the back of your nose/upper throat, which slows the speed of the cold virus multiplying, giving your body time to mount its defences.

I gather air-crew use it a lot.

In my case, I use it at the very first signs of a cold and keep it up for several days. I haven't had a bad cold in years, now, even when the entire family are falling all around me.
