To ask what car you would buy if you had 8k to do so?

I've inherited 10k and desperately need a new car as mine has done 165k and is knackered. I drive a lot, probably 12k a year easily. So economical would be good.

I wish Mnet still had the Car topic!

Do you have to carry stuff or people?

OneTC · 24/02/2023 16:13

Do you live in a ulez zone or in an area likely to be hit with similar schemes?

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 24/02/2023 16:13

what sort of journeys are you near the ulez zone?
as above, how many people and how much stuff?

Greatly · 24/02/2023 16:14

Well ideally I'd be able to get a few sacks of animal feed in it 😅 otherwise just the normal 4 or 5 people.

No.

Sorry that was in answer to the ulez question!

I bought a Ford fiesta 2014 plate with 32,000 on the clock, automatic so prob a bit dearer for £7500 great little car.

Scousefab · 24/02/2023 16:19

I love my fiesta to be honest. It’s the best car and I press a button at the front and it deices my front screen in the winter. Fords and Vauxhall generally have cheaper parts as they are mass produced. I would test drive a load and then read up on what is important to you eg cheaper tax, do you want battery or petrol etc

19lottie82 · 24/02/2023 16:20

Skoda Octavia

beguilingeyes · 24/02/2023 16:21

I would by a second hand Mazda MX5, but practically speaking either a Honda Jazz or a Toyota Yaris.

Lonelycrab · 24/02/2023 16:24

Very happy with my Honda Civic, paid exactly 8k for a six year old model with 40k on the clock. Feels more solid and better engineered than the focus I had before, Honda reliability is among the best. Wouldn’t touch a Vauxhall with a barge pole personally.

bellac11 · 24/02/2023 16:25

Skoda yeti based on a friend who has one

But 165k is nothing!

Alexandra2001 · 24/02/2023 16:30

Really pleased with my Octavia euro 6 engine, super economical, 114k and so far nothing major outside of service parts, runs as it did when new.
Loads of room for your bags of feed BUT it hasn't a flush boot floor as standard as it has no spare wheel.

Swearwolf · 24/02/2023 16:31

I'm super happy with my Mazda 2, it's small but they do also do a slightly larger mazda 3 and I'd definitely look at those.

emmathedilemma · 24/02/2023 16:32

If you need to transport heavy / bulky items such as animal feed, have a look at Hondas as the base of the back seats flips up so you can get masses in the footwell without having to fold the entire backseats down and it's often easier to put heavier stuff in there without having to lift it into the boot.

That's useful to know!

It cost her 8k

I've been looking and one in good decent condition for 8k will have done over 80k. I was hoping for less miles

Ok, I always take high mileage as a sign that the car has been well used and therefore is in good condition to be able to do that. Im highly suspicious of low mileage cars, probably been used for little short inefficient journeys and sat in the garage for ages.

I dont know what her mileage was, probably not that low.

My car has currently done 127k, its got years and years in it yet!!

Yeah mine will probably go on for a few more years, but it will need some bits doing soon, something is rattling somewhere, it's got a big scrape down the side and I've got the money so would like something a bit more comfy.

We've been looking lately, although we don't want a big car, and the best for that money along with some kit seem to be Citroen C1's, Nissan Micras, Renault Clio's

They are all nice cars but they'd be too small really. I do quite a lot of long journeys and it would be great to have something with a high driving position and comfy but 8k doesn't seem to be enough for a decent small SUV

Another suggestion for Ford fiesta! I absolutely love mine. I've an St line one and was a bit more expensive but there were some cheaper, older ones for about the 8k mark.

Greatly · 24/02/2023 19:12

Dh would love me to get a fiesta. He loves them although would never have one himself nowadays
