To ask is anyone has been able to get through to HMRC!

Namechanged as potentially outing with circumstances.

Started a new job last year in May and submitted my P45 etc. we only have online payslips and with a couple of months of working part of the month I didn't think much of checking them other than a cursory glance at the amount (lesson learnt).

Turns out I'm on an emergency tax code. Been trying to call HMRC since before Christmas various days and various times. Each time I get to about 2 hours and it cuts off.

Has anyone had any luck at all to keep my hopes up. Currently on 40 mins! I can't do it online as even though letters are coming through in my married name the gateway system is saying my surname is incorrect but I can't update it either as you have to have ID in your previous surname which obviously I no longer have!!

Twitter is full of people saying they can't speak to anyone and I'm starting to think they are a myth and not actually working anymore!

Good luck. I waited 2.5 hours on the phone and they still couldn’t sort my PAYE out properly. Said I owed £2,000 in tax when they owed me £800. After 4 goes I eventually spoke to a wonderful tax lady who knew what she was doing and my tax was sorted out.

They have recently taken on a lot of new staff so it’s lucky if you end up speaking to someone who knows there job properly.

Have you tried updating details/ flagging that the tax code is wrong via the HMRC App or your personal tax account on GOV.UK?
