Shop didn't deduct money off my gift card - what to do?

I went shopping at a big retailer and used a gift card to pay part of my total. I was at a self-checkout, and when I scanned it it wouldn't work. The shop assistant came over and also failed to get it to work, I said 'don't worry about it, I'll just use the gift card another time' but the assistant then asked what my balance was on the gift card, and then manually removed that amount from my total. I had handed them the gift card and thought that they had taken the gift card with them. However, as I was leaving I grabbed my receipts and saw that the gift card had been left at my self-checkout too so I just grabbed it along with the receipt without thinking and then went on with my day.

I just checked the balance of the gift card and no money has been deducted from it. For context, the gift card isn't for that retailer specifically, it's a third party gift card you can use at several different shops.

I have my receipt, WIBU to go to a different branch of the retailer (this wasn't my local branch) and hand over the gift card?

Just go spend it.

RunningFromInsanity · 19/02/2023 20:41

lol I would just spend it on something else

Kitkatcatflap · 19/02/2023 20:43

I would also spend it

JMSA · 19/02/2023 20:43

Me too!

mummyh2016 · 19/02/2023 20:44

If it's a large retailer I'd just spend it!

bananaboats · 19/02/2023 20:46

Yeah just spent it

somuchtolearnabout · 19/02/2023 20:46

You're being too honest for no reason, if it's a big retailer then nobody really benefits from you handing it in and the amount of effort it would take to explain the situation would make it a massive no for me. Go spend it and count it as a little lottery win for you

Just spend it

IglesiasPiggl · 19/02/2023 20:48

I don't think I could be bothered faffing about if it was their mistake.

Honestly things like this happen a lot. At my store we still have the button for a gift voucher and if the checkout assistant hits that instead of the one for gift card then no money gets deducted from the card and really that’s on us. No one gets in trouble for it unless they do it frequently.

Maybe donate a bit of the cash you’ve gained to a charity if you can afford to and consider it done.

Whatdayisitalexa · 19/02/2023 20:51

The till may have been short as it sounds like it may have gone through as cash. What does the receipt say? Sounds like an all for one card or similar, they're a right pain because the customer is often unsure of the exact balance and the transaction will decline if you request a penny more. It's up to you and your conscience!

MollyMunster · 19/02/2023 20:51

I’d spend it.

If you feel too guilty I would spend it on something useful and donate to a food bank or something, it’s too much hassle to explain in a shop. Unless it was £10,000 or something ridiculous.

Skyeheather · 19/02/2023 20:55

They might have been expecting you to post it in the coupon box at the self service checkout, I've noticed that whenever I'm in ASDA I get handed the voucher/coupon back and told to post it myself.

Just spend it - it's your lucky day!

Lougle · 19/02/2023 21:16

You could phone and ask what they'd like you to do.

ZekeZeke · 19/02/2023 21:19

It might take a while for the balance to be updated as its the weekend?

Rubytoos · 19/02/2023 21:32

The balance on your card may be updated overnight? It’s a third party provider, so perhaps not instant.
