To be worried about loosing my voice

Mild cold, very sore throat and bad phlegmy cough last few days. Covid negative. Not slept that well with it. Over the course of the morning I've completely lost my voice. Can barely croak a sentence out in a whisper! Work has been difficult.
I'm late 30s and never had this happen to me before. Feeling worried, seems to be getting worse by the hour.
Got a full weekend with DD, activities etc, partner away. Feel like such a idiot.

Could it be laryngitis? I've done nothing different the last week or two except for vaping a bit more than usual...a bad habit and I'm binning them for sure.
Any tips to help voice return?

Rest your voice box completely until you are recovered

Ludo19 · 17/02/2023 17:01

Is your throat sore? Try gargling with warm salty water.....don't swallow it. Try drinking lemon and honey too. Don't worry about losing your voice, it happens. Hope you feel better soon.

Stop vaping, and rest your voice.

These things happen. Annoying, but not concerning. My kids love it when I lose my voice. 😂

I Hope you feel better soon!

Best tip I got ( from an ENT surgeon); DONT whisper. It’s strains your vocal chords. Try to rest your voice as much as possible, let it take its time.

MyCatIsAnnoyinglyCute · 17/02/2023 17:09

You’ve just got to ride it out. My voice goes every time I have a bad cold.

Don't whisper at all - if you can't use your voice properly, don't use your voice. Trying to whisper will wreck your voice longer term.

Plenty of fluids and steam inhalation for 2 mins, 4 times a day to get hydration actually to your vocal cords.

This happens to me too, there’s a lot of viruses like this around at the moment. I have had this for a week and am now just feeling better. So, rest your voice let it run it’s course and don’t overdo things.

cocksstrideintheevening · 17/02/2023 17:58

It's just a virus, really. I thing to worry about.

TheOtherBoleynGirls · 17/02/2023 18:04

I’ve had this a few times. Don’t whisper, carry a notepad and pen or the notes app on your phone around, just don’t talk for a day or so! It’s annoying but my kids always find it hilarious. The school run on a Monday morning miming “I have no voice” seemed to make everyone else laugh too 🙄Plenty of hot drinks and it’ll pass in a few days.

If it reassures you OP I'm 39 and have never before lost my voice until a couple of weeks before Christmas. I was 3 days with a tiny croak at best, and then it returned.

Best 3 days of DH's life apparently HmmGrin

Same. Pretty much every virus I get goes to my throat/larynx/trachea. I lose my voice completely a couple of times a year.

Thanks everyone. I'm not in pain but voice has completely disappeared now. Got to take DD to a few things tomorrow so no rest but will try not to worry about it. Had hit lemon and honey and gargled salt water 🤞
