Is this norovirus or food poisoning?

Me, my partner and dad all had a takeaway last night.
Both me and DP woke up with nausea, stomach cramps and then the runs followed. DP was vomiting too. I’ve been out this week but DP hasn’t left the house, so even if I’d picked up norovirus or a gastro bug, surely it would take a day or two between us getting ill? But we literally went down at exactly the same time, about 5am (takeaway was eaten about 6pm). My dad however isn’t unwell and we all had the same thing, unless we had a dodgy batch or something?

I’ve had watery poo all day long and horrendous nausea and stomach cramps.
I’ve still got diarrhoea and I’m now aching all over, chills and a fever. Headache too.
DP feels the same. Although not as achy as me (and he threw up, I didn’t). We are isolating in our bedroom just in case (my mum and dad are visiting - incredibly bad timing!)

I've had this all week. Started on Monday, my son got it on Tuesday. Not food poisoning as we both ate different foods and were away from each other all weekend as I was staying with family elsewhere. I think we've had norovirus. I'm still not right. You have my sympathies op it's awful

SpongeCake23 · 16/02/2023 20:17

@cushioncovers how long did you start to feel a bit better (not achy/shivery) and able to keep some food down?

Oh I really hope it’s not a bug. My son has only just got over chickenpox 😭 we’re trying to stay away from him and bleaching surfaces, so hopefully it’ll work.

I’ve got some sambucol and a multivitamin that I might give him in the morning. I know it might not do anything, but I feel like I want to try.

We had norovirus twice during the last few years. It’s highly contagious so we both went down within 12 hours of each other. Even sleeping separately and using just one bathroom for being ill and the other for the non sick partner didn’t prevent it. Lots of water, toast to eat annd ice lollies and that’s all you can do.

cushioncovers · 16/02/2023 20:36

Op the vomiting continued for 6 hours, the diarrhoea lasted from Monday lunchtime and has only stopped lunchtime today. I also had shivers, sweats, headache and aching joints that lasted about 24 hours. All I did the first 48 hours was sleep in between rushing to the toilet

SpongeCake23 · 16/02/2023 20:38

@cushioncovers if you’ve had diarrhoea that whole time, what have you eaten?

A slice of toast each day until today where I have had several slices of toast. I haven't been able to face anything else. My main problem was being thirsty all day Tuesday and Wednesday but not being able to keep fluids in. Today has been better as long as I sip slowly. It's been horrendous.

SpongeCake23 · 16/02/2023 20:52

Sounds god awful.
Hope it’s over quicker for me if it is that.
I just had an ice lolly and that seems to have stayed in better than water.

D&V is predominantly caused by a viral infection (Norovirus being an example).
Bacterial infections associated with food poisoning, with the exception of salmonella, have specifically emetic or diarrhoea symptoms. Not both, (depending on the infection and the strain of infection).
The only way to truly tell is to submit a stool sample and ask for virology as well as routine pathogens.
Hope you feel better soon. Generally, the shorter the incubation period the shorter the duration of illness. Make sure you take rehydration therapy to replace electrolytes.

cushioncovers · 16/02/2023 20:56

Hopefully it passes soon for you op, we are all different, I haven't had any diarrhoea since 1pm today so I'm feeling hopeful, I've actually had a small cup of tea and a few mouthfuls of chicken about an hour ago and it's stayed put although my stomach is making the most weird noises. 🤞

BankOfDave · 16/02/2023 20:58

The chills, fever and headache along with D&V would make me strongly think that’s norovirus. Sounds like when I had it a few years.

Get well soon, awful bug. Flip side was a few
pounds weight loss!

Lovemusic33 · 16/02/2023 20:59

I had salmonella a year ago and it felt a lot different from a bug, stomach cramp were the worst part and extreme diarrhoea, I had no sickness at all, I ended up in hospital as I thought I something was seriously wrong (the pain was up there with labour pain). It wasn’t until a few days later I got conformation that it was salmonella, I was unwell for a couple weeks.

containsnuts · 16/02/2023 21:04

Was there anything else that you and DP ate or drank that day that your parents didn't? Could be food poisoning but maybe not the takeaway.

MummyJ12 · 16/02/2023 21:05

Salmonella enterica is typically D&V but extremely rare due to high infective dose. Not all strains of salmonella have D&V as symptoms and not everyone responds the same way. @Lovemusic33 you may have had a different strain for example, salmonella typhi. (More common).
In this instance I suspect a viral infection however.

ShakespearesBlister · 16/02/2023 21:07

Have you tested for COVID at all? I had many of those symptoms and tested positive.

Jay3004 · 16/02/2023 21:10

I had this last week and it was awful! Sickness lasted the first 12hrs, diarrhoea started after that and lasted 48hrs. Coupled with aches, shivers, etc. I barely ate for 3 days and even now a week later I’ve very little appetite. Hope you feel better soon OP.

Booooot · 16/02/2023 21:13

I have this too. Collapsed in a pool of vomit and shit myself this morning. Fun fun!
