AIBU to get rid of my land line

AIBU to get rid of my land line, if I can, to save the money costs. We've all got mobiles, so people can get hold of us and we can call out. Do other people do this?

OP posts:
WallaceinAnderland · 16/02/2023 13:56

Most people don't have them anyway.

DemonHost · 16/02/2023 13:56

Plenty do it. The only downsides are having good mobile reception and no landline phone in a powercut (not good for the elderly or vulnerable).

Ponoka7 · 16/02/2023 13:59

If you've got other people's phones at home that you can use and/or laptop, then you'll manage fine without a LL. I got rid of mine years ago.

Scaredofbeingalone · 16/02/2023 13:59

I thought you need a landline for broadband in your house though? That's why we keep hours as we don't have unlimited data on our phones

Dotjones · 16/02/2023 14:01

A lot of people don't bother with one.

Providers are increasingly moving landlines to VoIP which routes calls over the internet. This requires a power source (unlike traditional landlines which are powered through the line itself) so if there is a power cut they are no use anyway.

Nariiad · 16/02/2023 14:01

I unplugged mine years ago. The only people calling it were scammers!

ChilliBandit · 16/02/2023 14:01

I haven’t had one for about 5 years now. Never been an issue. Have a work mobile as well as a personal so at least always one charged for emergencies, could always charge it in the car in a pinch anyway. I really see zero point in landlines these days.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 16/02/2023 14:03

We've not used our for around 10 years. I thought most people had already stopped using them.

Zanatdy · 16/02/2023 14:04

i don’t have a landline telephone but keeping the line in my package is cheaper than not. Odd

Bluebellbike · 16/02/2023 14:07

I have a landline as my broadband is cheaper with the landline. No phone plugged in though as the only calls I get on it are nuisance/marketing calls.

MintJulia · 16/02/2023 14:07

I've kept ours because our mobile reception is poor, because we have frequent power cuts and because in an emergency, ds is more competent with a phone for which he doesn't have to remember a passcode. And it costs £1.22 a month.

JorisBonson · 16/02/2023 14:07

I can't remember the last time I had a landline.

HappiestSleeping · 16/02/2023 14:09

I only have a land line for broadband. Never use it for phone calls.

Abouttimemum · 16/02/2023 14:09

We don’t have a landline, it’s not necessary any more.

Not any more. I got rid of ours 3 years ago and our broadband works fine.

MaverickGooseGoose · 16/02/2023 14:16

We have it because of something to do with broadband but its been unplugged for years.

helpfulperson · 16/02/2023 14:21

How do you get your broadband? In some places that is still via a landline line.

123sunshine · 16/02/2023 14:40

Got rid of mine years ago. Total uneccessary cost and no one used it. We all use our mobile phones.

babybunny123 · 16/02/2023 14:41

mine is free at weekends with my Broadband but i never use it.

Riverlee · 16/02/2023 14:43

I still have a landline, and make and receive calls on it, but a lot of people don’t.

Scaredofbeingalone · 16/02/2023 14:43

That's what I meant. I don't actually have a phone plugged in the wall as we don't use it. But we need the line to have the sky broadband through otherwise we wouldn't have WiFi in our home

I didn't know there was any other way of having broadband that didn't involve having a landline

When we last renewed our broadband it was about 20% cheaper without a landline. As we hadn’t had a legitimate call on it for a couple of years (having finally trained my older brother to call my mobile) we got rid of it.

Don't they?

Yes they do, as long as the phone plugged in is a basic one and not one requiring a separate power supply (eg answerphones, cordless phones).

We've still got ours - only our mothers call us on it.
