To be made to feel inadequate by Robin Ellacot?

For Strike fans, I would love to be invited round to share a take away and a natter in their office one evening, but I feel like I would have nothing to offer! Not pretty enough, young enough or quick witted enough for Strike to enjoy my company. Robin would probably be nice to me, I am sure, but also quite relieved when I left

I think I would have to bring something extra special along, some sort of delicious, luxury home made dessert...

Anyone else really enjoy these characters, but feel a bit useless in comparison - doesnt really happen to me in other fiction, dont know why it does with these two

I understand how you feel , but mostly about Robin, Strike has helped the ' under dog' a lot and I feel he would be easier to talk to to be honest. Robin is everything I'm not, so I would feel a bit intimidated by her as she seems pretty straight talking as well as very attractive and young , so I'd be on the back foot there.
They are a power couple, but Strike would help you of you needed it , how he dealt with Orlando's mum in Silkworm showed his good side to a t! ( I've forgotten her name )
I can't wait for the next novel as I do love these two characters!

the80sweregreat · 15/02/2023 20:28

Her name was Leonora ( silkworm book 2)
Strike was incredible with her

bloodyshed · 15/02/2023 20:31

Love this show! Don’t yeah Robin Ellacott is probably slightly terrifying!

Nimbostratus100 · 15/02/2023 23:08

I havent seen all the series, but I am hooked on the books, read them repeatedly.

No, they're both lovely. She's not scary. She's competent but caring.

Xmasbaby11 · 15/02/2023 23:13

Absolutely. She’s gorgeous and and great person, clever, moral and funny. And somehow humble and not trading on her looks. I think she’d be really good company.

The4teddybears · 15/02/2023 23:19

Do you think there’s sexual chemistry between them ? I do, and I was hoping something would happen I’m the last program but it didn’t .

CampervanKween · 15/02/2023 23:21

The slow burn. Always the best way.

In the books they are in love but both independently decide not to pursue a relationship as it would jeopardise their agency

I don’t want it to be ruined by them getting together. Painful love from afar!!

i had never thought about it but yes she is intimidating because she is an amazing all round person, but I think she would be nice to everyone so would make you feel welcome. Strike, you could get drunk with and out the world to rights!

DorritLittle · 15/02/2023 23:30

Her wardrobe makes me feel inadequate.

I think I need to read the books then ❤️
You can see the chemistry on TV , especially coming from him but he knows it’ll go nowhere.

IrishJP · 15/02/2023 23:45

Haven’t watched it because I adore the books and I don’t want it ruined. I watched the first part of the cuckoos calling and there was too much that had been changed.

i suspect those of you who have only seen the series may be missing key details about both of their personalities.

Strike just seems very much like a bloke you could enjoy a curry and a beer with and have a laugh, but he can be incredibly sympathetic in his work, as a PP said, his companion for Leonora in the silkworm and for Orlando, and of Rochelle in Cuckoo, for Stephanie in Career of evil, the Athorns in troubled blood and for josh in TIBH, He’s no nonsense about things and a bit tactless in expressing feelings (overthinking robins gift in troubled blood and ending up grabbing something last minute) And he cares deeply about his mother, nephew and aunt and uncle.

Hes a really decent guy, lives a simple life. Definitely the kind of guy I could be friendly with.

And as for Robin, yes she’s beautiful, and she’s career focused, intelligent etc

But she’s been through an awful lot of shit. She has her own personal struggles and isn’t as together as it likely appears in the series

There’s a lot in the books about their emotions and inner thoughts that really paints a picture of who they are and I feel it’s likely lost in translation to screen.

I’ll shut up now, sorry! I just really love the series and JKR in general and don’t know anyone IRL who’s read them.

NearlyfiftyF · 15/02/2023 23:55

@IrishJP I love the books too and was so disappointed with the last series, they took too much out and changed too much.

i think that’s why I don’t want to see them get together, because it’s not as cut and dry as it seems in the tv adaptations. They need to stay best friends and partners.

the books also show how strong, determined, take no shit, clever, funny, kind etc etc she is. Although I think the tv show did better fkr her than the HO films did for Ginny Weasley. I think the next time JKR writes something that gets adapted for the big or small screen she should only sell the rights if they agree to make them longer and include everything!!!!!

Calistan · 15/02/2023 23:58

Are the books better than the series? I was less than enthralled with both characters and story when I watched. I gave it a good go. A very much blander and more insipid kenzie and gennaro type pairing.

IrishJP · 16/02/2023 00:02

@NearlyfiftyF
i agree
i could cope with HP just about because I understand that they were huge books and you can’t keep everything but some things annoy me, like winky not being in it, no peeves etc.

The casual vacancy was awful IMO and didn’t do the book justice so I’m just scared to keep watching strike.

The books are complex, especially with regard to their feelings towards each other. And I’ve no idea how they’d successfully adapt TIBH to screen.

the80sweregreat · 16/02/2023 08:54

The books are so good and their relationship isn't straightforwards

lifeturnsonadime · 16/02/2023 09:03

I much prefer the books to the TV series.

I'd like to spend time with Robin (book version) but Robin (TV version) would make me feel inferior.

Also what have they done with Charlotte in the TV series? She's nothing like she's portrayed in the books!

the80sweregreat · 16/02/2023 09:13

The tv series is a poor imitation of the books as they are lengthy and explores both of their previous relationships in depth from book one. Charlotte had messed up Strike's life and Matt was an adulterous man child who wanted her pregnant and bare foot in the kitchen with a Normal job! Both of them have a lot of demons to deal with over time.

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 16/02/2023 09:18

I want her to teach me her advanced driving skills, when she commandeered the car across a field (in the first book I think). I think about that a lot!

the80sweregreat · 16/02/2023 09:24

I do like Robin, but I feel I'd prefer Strike. He can come across as bit of a snob sometimes , so no idea why I'd prefer him tbh! They are both quite formidable though
In the book , she negotiated round a car accident on a motorway not a field so even more impressive.

PacmanIsLost · 16/02/2023 09:36

I do love the books and the characters but Strike is awful to the girlfriends in his life. I know he’s not invested in the relationships but it’s the one thing that is really bothers me. He just keeps them hanging.

Fully agree with this. I‘ve only seen a couple of episodes, but I thought Strike and Robin were both a good fit, but Charlotte? I don’t know, I‘ve always imagined her more like the young Kate Bush.
The actress in the series is beautiful, but somehow very composed - lacking a certain edge and madness.

Kentishbornknitter · 16/02/2023 09:44

I have TIBH to read (Christmas present and waiting for a mini break to get started). I love the depth of characters in the books. The description of Strike’s pain with his father’s rejection when he was a boy, moved me to tears. The books are so so good. I love the tv series too. My husband is an amputee and the tv adaptation does a great job with showing Strike’s stump and the difficulties he has. The only thing in the books that annoy me is the farting sofa!
