Tried to buy a bar of chocolate in Sainsburys and...

Apparently they don't sell single bars any more in my local branch. Just multipacks. Lots of energy bars/graze bars, no single chocolate bars. Was my mouth BU to drop open when the shelf stacker told me??

(I bought a multipack of Twirls. Damn you Sainsburys.)

Must vary as my local branch has loads. They're part of the meal deal and sit next to the single packs of crisps.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/02/2023 15:39

Given that a single bar is usually 70/80% of the cost of a 4 pack, they probably don't sell very many of them.

I think they've been moved to that section in most supermarkets now.

Same at mine, near the lottery and cigarettes counter.

MrsPriceAndHerJamTarts · 14/02/2023 15:40

Aren't they just in a different place to the multipacks? My local Sainsbury's (not a big one!) has an end shelf with single bars...

Yep, same here in our little local one and the big superstore

A34 · 14/02/2023 15:40

I was wandering round the shop for ages - past the crips and by the sandwiches before I thought to ask.

No chocolate bars with meal deals at Sainsbury's ?

Not according to the shelf stacker I spoke to. I was looking for ages, too (not desperate for chocolate...)

Depends upon the reason they've made that decision.

Is it because they don't sell? Because they're too easy to get damaged? Because they aren't allowed to display them in prominent places anymore so they'd be in locations in store where they're more easily shoplifted? Just to maximise sales (proven by you buying a multipack rather than not get anything)? Part of pretending to be interested in health? Because somebody spending 60p on a Crunchie isn't spending £2 on a chocolate peanut butter protein bar?

swapcicles · 14/02/2023 15:51

They've moved our ones round the corner from where it used to be next to the tills to next to the magazines and baby stuff.
Something to do with trying to be healthier and not making it easy to purchase "bad" food.

YABU to want to buy a single bar of chocolate 😊

Yep! (Do you work for Sainsburys?!)

A single bar is NEVER enough. Surely everyone knows that?

I wouldn’t rely on the knowledge of the shop worker. I once was in Boots and asked for something, I forget what, and they said they don’t stock it, even though I had found it on their website and went into the store specifically for their own brand.

I found it myself eventually, so just concluded she just didn’t remember every product in the store. It happens I guess

I'm going to eat the rest tonight.

Much more economical than a single bar, which is never enough anyway!

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 14/02/2023 16:51

Our local Morrisons doesn’t either

theworldhas · 14/02/2023 16:54

They’ve been doing it for ages - same here in Ireland. Or rather you can get a 40g bar for about €1.40 versus some big 110g bag or multipack for about €2. So your choice is either getting ripped off or staring down obesity - take your pick (no, I don’t have any self control where chocolate is concerned). We’re probably all heading the way (or size) of the US.

Hiddenvoice · 14/02/2023 18:04

In my sainsburys the chocolate is not next to the meal deals, instead it is at the end of the aisle next to the self checkouts. It is easily missable

mumda · 14/02/2023 18:44

They used to be at the cig counter.
Maybe they have to keep them away from impulse snackers?

Crumpetdisappointment · 14/02/2023 18:50

i think thats the deal, to allegedly stop people being tempted,
when in actual fact resistance is futile and you just buy a multi pack!

AFS1 · 14/02/2023 18:59

The important thing to keep in mind is that there are only calories in the bar of chocolate you intended to buy. The other ones don’t count, because you only meant to buy 1.

Sporty2022 · 14/02/2023 19:12

I remember in the 90s when a bar of chocolate was 30p.

Now if you go in a shop and buy a single chocolate bar it’s about 70/80 pence.

A multi pack of 4 is £1. Although they are smaller.

Everything chocolate wise is smaller nowadays!

Sporty2022 · 14/02/2023 19:14

To add, the only place to buy single chocolate bars nowadays is the traditional newsagent type of shops.
