As per the title really. Hoping to buy a car today and realised did not tell DVLA about my house move and details on my driving license and existing log book are incorrect (I know, I could get a massive fine). I will rectify the situation asap but can I still buy a new car today? (will not be trading in the old car).

As I understand it, yes you can provided you have proof of your new address. They should be able to put your current address onto the V5C without requiring proof that it matches your DL. And they are motivated to make the sale.

You should also be able to get insurance. But you cannot drive it with a drivers licence that is invalid due to an incorrect address. That’s six points and a £1000 fine if you get caught, and if you have an accident your insurance is void because you knowingly drove with an invalid driving licence.

If it were me, I’d buy the car, have a person collect it for me and park it outside my house on their insurance, and get my license changes. You can do it online and it takes about two weeks, and once they’ve confirmed that it’s being processed I think you can drive straight away under ‘it’s in the post’. But you can phone them and ask, it’s dead easy and they’re really friendly and helpful. And no long queues like phoning your energy supplier.

Thanks! I don’t think the wrong address invalidates license or insurance - but it is certainly a hefty fine.

Cant see why you couldt buy a car. Just change your address when you get home .problem solved

Take alternative proof of new address, eg utility bills or bank statement, and say you have recently moved and just realised your licence address is now wrong. I'm sure they will be fine with that.

The dealer won't care. They don't need to see ID.

Thanks!
